Research by scientists at MindLab International at the Innovation Centre at the University of Sussex has shown that 47% of Brits believe the Internet is now more important than religion in everyday life.
20% of people spend more time on the Internet than with their family and 25% of these say the Internet is absolutely essential to organising their lives.
The research showed a growing number of Britons suffered increased stress when they were unable to get their on-line "hit" and a newly coined phrase and phenomena called "discomgoogolation" has been identified, where people feel distress and anxiety when they cannot get online.
Dr David Lewis lead the research at MindLab International at the Innovation centre at the University of Sussex.
They measured increased stress levels through monitoring of heart rates and brainwave activity using EEG technology.
