Lush confessionals from Belfast DJ/producer turned Hollywood soundtracks king

David Holmes has long seemed lost to the world of soundtracks. Eight years have passed since his last DJ/artist album, during which time he has scored Hollywood blockbusters, including the entire Oceans trilogy. Even the title of this eclectic return seems to suggest he remains in thrall to the cinema – and yet the reality is far more intimate, nuanced and surprisingly personal.

This cathartic record hints at midlife musings, with Holmes both choosing a picture of his late parents for the cover and reflecting upon the early music that inspired him. Opener Heard Wonder has the motorik throb of German electro-pioneers Neu!, while Love Reign Over Me recalls the serene guitar haze of The Jesus & Mary Chain and Slowdive.

Holmes even debuts his own thin-but-engaging singing voice, increasing the impression that this previously near-invisible figure should have stepped out from behind the mixing desk a long time ago.
