As usual, we’re looking forward to some fresh telly and films on Netflix in January. This is what you can expect in the coming month…

By Ross Campbell, Writer

Start the year off right with a well-prepared Netflix calendar. From classic movies to brand new telly, it’s going to be an exciting month. And be sure to set a reminder for the much talked-about Netflix spoof of its own programming, with The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window.

And don’t forget, if you’re streaming the latest on Netflix this month, Virgin Media is the leading major broadband provider for streaming content (according to the Netflix ISP Speed Index). Good to go? Let’s jump into this month of goodness…

Don’t Look Up

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Christmas Eve

In this star-studded film from Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice), Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are amateur astronomers, armed with some sobering news. An asteroid is on a collision course with Earth, but getting world leaders to take them seriously isn’t how it usually goes in disaster films. Sharing the spotlight are Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande and Chris Evans to name but a few.

Cobra Kai

On the cusp of 2022 comes one of the most anticipated series of the year, just getting in there before the bells ring out. It’s the next seasons of The Karate Kid spin-off set decades after the original film trilogy. Cancel your NYE party plans, because you’re going to want to see this one.

The Lost Daughter

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Eve

Just time for one final big film of 2021 then? Olivia Colman plays a woman heading out on holiday to get away from it all, but soon finds that her past is troubling her once again. Which, frankly, is the perfect metaphor for how New Year’s Eve itself pans out. Better to stay in and watch this, then.

Scream 4

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Day

With a new Scream due to hit cinemas mid-January, there’s no better time to re-watch the last chapter. Scream 4 takes place 15 years after the Woodsboro high school massacre, courtesy of the knife-wielding Ghostface.

Sidney (Neve Campbell) has written a book in that time and is returning to Woodsboro as part of the tour. However, her excitement to reunite with old friends Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) is quickly dashed when her presence triggers the return of a familiar face.

Silver Linings Playbook

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Day

This comedy drama sees Pat (Brad Cooper) trying to rebuild his life after separating from his wife and spending time in a psychiatric facility, owing to his bipolar disorder. When he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who also struggles with her mental health, the two find a connection. But whether they can make it work is another question entirely.

She’s The Man

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Day

Viola (Amanda Bynes) loves playing football, but when her team is disbanded and she’s not allowed to play with the boys, all seems lost. What if she were to dress up as her twin brother and have another swing at try-outs?

Werewolves Within

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Day

When new ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) arrives in the sleepy Vermont town of Beaversfield, he discovers a lot of strange goings on… and that’s just the residents. However, when the weather turns nasty and the town loses power, he suggests everyone take refuge as there could be something sinister out there. At least, Finn hopes it’s out there. Written by the aptly-named Mishna Wolff.

Marie Antoinette

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from New Year’s Day

In this slick retelling of the marriage between Austria and France, Kirsten Dunst is the controversial and electric Marie Antoinette. Having been sent to marry Louis XVI at just 14-years-old, it’s no wonder things go awry, as she quickly grows into the woman remembered by history.

The Gentlemen

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Monday 3 January

From the brain of Guy Ritchie comes The Gentlemen, a stylish, high-octane story of wealth, power and status in London. Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) has a successful underground drug ring going on, but when the time comes to sell up, it’s not as simple as talking to the highest bidder.

With Hugh Grant (Paddington 2), Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Colin Farrell (In Bruges) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), this slick gangster comedy isn’t to be missed. Fun fact for when this film next comes up at the pub, Ritchie’s working title for the picture was Toff Guys.

Action Pack

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Tuesday 4 January

With the excitement of Christmas and presents behind us, keep the little ones entertained with Action Pack. Follow the adventures of miniature superheroes Treena, Watts, Wren and Clay as they bring the baddies to justice.

Four To Dinner

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Wednesday 5 January

Uncle Drew

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Thursday 6 January

When Dax (Lil Rel Howery, Get Out) loses his basketball team to rival coach Mookie (Nick Kroll, Big Mouth), it’s a race against time to round up a squad and retain his name. That’s when he comes across the legendary, and very old, Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving in prosthetics) who still has skills on the court. Thankfully Drew has an all-star team in mind, brought to life by Shaq, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and Lisa Leslie.

The House

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Friday 14 January

The House offers three original stop-motion tales, from the point of view of three individual parties who have made the same house their home. With pithy scripting and clever animation, it’s got a certain Wes Anderson vibe to it, promising a memorable and bizarre watch.

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Friday 14 January

When an archivist is tasked with restoring old video tapes from the 90s, the content raises a lot of questions, appearing to show the documentation of a mysterious cult.

Ozark

Find series 4 in Apps & Games > Netflix from Friday 21 January. Series 1-3 available now

Following the action-packed finale in season 3, expectations are sky high for the fourth series, and Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are in for a bumpy ride. The final series will arrive in two parts (with seven episodes each), as is the trend these days – see Breaking Bad, Mad Men, or more recently, Money Heist. Jason Bateman commented: “A super-sized season means super-sized problems for the Byrdes.”

For those who are new to Ozark, it follows the Byrde family, who have relocated to Missouri’s Ozarks, with financial advisor Marty forced to do the books for a drug lord.

Munich – The Edge Of War

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Saturday 22 January

When the two meet in Munich’s international conference, they quickly find themselves at the door step of the Second World War. Based on the bestselling work by Robert Harris.

The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Saturday 28 January

Do you remember The Woman In The Window starring Amy Adams? You should do, it only came to Netflix in May 2021. Anyway, this mini-series is a sort of spoof of that, starring Kristen Bell. The show sees heartbroken Anna mournfully staring out the window, day in, day out. As she becomes infatuated with the handsome stranger who’s moved in next door, her grip on reality begins to slip. Did she really just witness a murder from her living room window?

Poking fun at the usual tropes of psychological thrillers, Bell’s Anna explains that she feels “like a sandcastle and the tide has come in... like a rickety chair... like an old... jalopy? I don’t know”.

In From The Cold

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix from Saturday 28 January

This eight-episode sci-fi-thriller centres around single mother Jenny (Margarita Levieva), who is forced to confront a past she thought was long buried.
