As the first pictures of Timothée Chalamet in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka are released, here’s where you can watch the best of his other movies

Roald Dahl stories have been a mixed bag when it comes to screen adaptations – and none so much as perhaps the author’s most famous work, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. While the Gene Hackman version is much loved, Dahl himself reportedly hated it. Tim Burton’s version, meanwhile, left a – wait for it – bad taste in the mouth of many viewers.

It was Willy Wonka’s new backstory in Burton’s 2005 modification that provoked the most ire from the book’s hardcore fans, which painted the eccentric fellow as the repressed son of a dentist. So newest adaptation Wonka focusing on the amazing chocolatier’s pre-factory life comes as something of a surprise. But stand down those fears.

It’s being directed by Paul King, the man behind both Paddington movies, with a screenplay co-written alongside Paddington collaborator Simon Farnaby. Remember, Paddington was by no means a slam dunk when that first film came out in 2014. So if they can take an apparent relic like that kindly bear and make him into cinematic gold, this is very exciting.

It’s also a musical. So if it’s anything like that Hugh Grant scene during the end credits in Paddington 2, then frankly give it the Oscar now and let’s be done with it.

Timothée Chalamet stars as the titular Big Willy, with the first images of the film making their way to social media this week via the actor’s Instagram account. Although many were quick to point out a certain likeness to another of history’s great men – Charles Dickens. Well, The Great Gonzo version in The Muppet Christmas Carol, at least.

Wonka, which also stars Olivia Colman, Matt Lucas, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins and plenty more will be released in cinemas in 2023. That’s quite a long wait, so if you want to catch up on Timothée Chalamet’s other work across the Virgin Media service – or other Roald Dahl stories – here’s where you can watch them.

Little Women

Available in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

Greta Gerwig’s masterpiece adaptation of the great American novel is one of the greatest period dramas ever made – and yet feels so contemporary despite the bonnets and bodices. Chalamet plays Laurie, whose life becomes intertwined with the March family's in a big way.

The King

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

Timothée Chalamet’s celebrated turn as Henry V wowed critics, in what turned out to be a hugely successful 2019 for the young actor alongside his turn in Little Women. Chalamet portrays the wayward Prince “Hal” in his journey from party prince to warrior king.

Christmas With The Coopers

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

It’s never too early for a Christmas film. Here, a dysfunctional family reunites for the season, with Chalamet playing a young high-schooler looking for love. If Little Women is high art, then this one, by comparison, features Steve Martin narrating the film as a St Bernard dog.

Esio Trot

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

The last of Roald Dahl’s books published in his lifetime, it’s unlike any of his other works – switching his archetypical story of evil adults vs heroic children into the sweet story of the elderly Mr Hoppy (Dustin Hoffman) and the neighbour he loves from afar (Judi Dench).

Matilda

Matilda

Arguably the greatest Dahl movie. With a film based on Tim Minchin’s hit West End musical version coming soon, catch up on the original as Matilda (the ever-present 90s child actor Mara Wilson) deals with her disreputable family and ruthless headteacher.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

Wes Anderson turns his hand to stop-motion animation in this joyful version of the tale about a reformed criminal fox. With a stacked voice cast as big as any of Anderson’s work, including George Clooney in the lead, it captures the magic of Dahl’s work perfectly.

The BFG

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

If Tim Burton’s eye for the macabre seemed to fit Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’s often tragic endings, then Steven Spielberg’s thematic eye for childhood was the perfect choice for The BFG. Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant was equally inspired casting.

The Witches

Available in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

This 2020 version might not be as chilling as the much-loved 1990 edition starring Anjelica Huston (and produced by Jim Henson, no less), but Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch gives a spirited performance for a new generation of Roald Dahl fans.
