From Call Of Duty and Fortnite to EA Sports FC, the world of online gaming has become incredibly sophisticated. But with every new game doubling down with even more immersive graphics, fast-paced action, epic storytelling and lighting-fast reactivity, you’ll need oodles of efficient WiFi to support them. That’s where we can help.
Experts suggest that a download speed of 25Mbps should suffice for online gaming. However, faster speeds (50-100Mbps) are even better, especially if you want to banish lag and if you’re sharing WiFi with other devices in your household. If you’re already a WiFi Max customer, you’ve got a huge advantage – it comes with our WiFi guarantee, a promise that you can make the most of download speeds of at least 30Mbps in every room.
But no matter what kind of broadband package you’ve got, every one of our customers can boost their WiFi for gaming just by following three very simple steps.
1. Keep other online devices to a minimum
Is your game lagging behind or taking ages to download? Double-screening might be slowing you down. Running other apps from your phone or even streaming background music on the same WiFi can affect the speed of your console. And if you live in a household where others are streaming telly, on video calls or shopping online, you might need to negotiate a compromise.
2. Check to see if you can swap your gaming server
Sometimes issues can arise because your online game uses a server that’s far from you and your Hub. Check the game’s settings for instructions on how to change servers – the closer the server, the more stable the game.
3. Try a wired connection
If you can, connect your console or computer via an Ethernet cable to your Hub, or router. If you’re a WiFi Max customer you can use the ethernet ports featured within both black and white WiFi Pods, allowing you to benefit further from improved speeds and reliability. This will ensure that your game is always drawing a low-latency, reliable connection to the router or Pod, reducing lag and guaranteeing a smoother-running game.
And don’t forget, with a Virgin Media Broadband package for gamers, you’ll be set up to dominate the competition with a fast, stable connection. Find out more here.
