January and February bring tons of football action from the Premier League, Scottish Premiership, EFL, WSL and Bundesliga too, as well as the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup featuring four of England’s biggest clubs. There’s world title boxing, tennis, international netball and T20 cricket from the southern hemisphere – plus an intriguing new golf competition that could shake up the whole sport. It’s all on Sky Sports in the coming month.

Football: Premier League
English football fans watched on in amazement – and, let’s be honest, relief – as Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City lost game after game at the end of 2024. That means there’s less of the “title decider” hype that we’ve seen over the past few seasons as they prepare to meet Arsenal at the Emirates. But make no mistake, it’s still a huge clash, as both sides look to keep up the pressure at the top. They’re without star men in Rodri and Bukayo Saka, but there will be plenty of quality on the pitch that should ensure an intriguing clash on the first weekend of February.
That’ll be a real Super Sunday, as two of the Premier League’s most unpredictable teams meet in the earlier kick-off when Tottenham visit Brentford. There’s plenty more action from teams near the top of the table this month, as City visit Ipswich and host Chelsea, and Arsenal entertain Aston Villa. And of course Sky Sports has lots more live Prem matches, in a month that could see some serious shake-ups in the league with the transfer window open.

Even Rangers fans would probably admit they didn’t expect a 3-0 win in the Old Firm’s Hogmanay clash. It was a terrifically effective performance from the Light Blues that restricted Celtic to a single shot on target and ended the defending champions’ unbeaten season. It will give Philippe Clement’s team renewed hope of closing the gap and keeping the title race alive. You can see Rangers in action at home to Aberdeen and then away to Dundee United this month, while Celtic are at Dundee and Motherwell, also live on Sky Sports.

Manchester City were matching Chelsea win for win at the top of the table but suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in November, followed by a more surprising loss at Everton that left City six points off the top going into the winter break. It’s going to be difficult to reignite that title challenge, especially without injured star defender Alex Greenwood, but City have got the talent to get back to winning ways in home matches against Man Utd and Arsenal and away to Aston Villa this month – all live on Sky Sports. Liverpool, Spurs and high-flying Brighton are in TV action over the coming weeks too.

Football: EFL Championship
There’s no doubt about the big game in the Championship this month, as Leeds and Burnley meet at Turf Moor on the final Monday in January. Coaches Daniel Farke and Scott Parker have lots of experience (including promotions) at this level and plenty of talent in their squads, which – added to the pressure of a title race – should make for a fascinating game that could have a significant impact on the top of the table.
December saw several managerial departures in this division, notably at Plymouth, where Wayne Rooney exited with the club bottom of the table. See how Argyle get on in their new era with home games against QPR, Burnley and West Brom – the latter having lost their own manager when Carlos Corberán left for Valencia. Former Coventry manager Mark Robins is now at Stoke, who have sacked Stephen Schumacher and Narcís Pèlach already this season: they face Oxford and Middlesbrough at the Bet365 Stadium this month, live on Sky Sports.

Football: EFL League One
A few days ahead of the Burnley-Leeds clash in the Championship, there’s a meeting between arguably League One’s biggest clubs when Wrexham welcome both Birmingham and the Sky Sports cameras to the Cae Ras. Blues forwards Jay Stansfield and Alfie May are among the league’s most prolific marksmen this term, but Wrexham have been potent in front of goal too, sharing the goals around the team. If Paul Mullins can find the scoring form of recent seasons, League One defences should look out. The north Wales side have been strong at home this season – at the time of writing, all their defeats were away ones – so they’ll approach this crunch game with confidence.

Football: EFL League Two
Port Vale were the early pace-setters in League Two but after a winless December they slipped from the top of the table, replaced by Walsall who by contrast won all six league matches in the final month of 2024, and saw in 2025 with an impressive victory at Notts County. Nathan Lowe has been their star player, the 19-year-old striker leading the division’s scoring stats in the first half of the season, so coach Mat Sadler will no doubt be resisting any attempt by Stoke to recall the on-loan teenager.
The West Midlands side travel to Bradford on 25 January to continue their quest for promotion in a match that’s live on Sky Sports+. The same day, there’s the always-spicy sort-of-derby between AFC Wimbledon – also looking good for elevation to League One – and MK Dons at Stadium MK.

Football: EFL Cup – Semi-finals
There’s still the possibility of a final between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, two clubs desperate to end silverware droughts, after both won the first leg of their semi-finals. Newcastle’s 2-0 win at the Emirates was the more impressive result and they’ll be confident of seeing off Arsenal in the second leg, while Spurs have a slimmer one-goal lead and must travel to Anfield, where Liverpool will surely perform better than they did in the first game. Of course, nothing is decided and anything can happen in the second legs, which take place in the first week of February live on Sky Sports Football. The final is on 16 March.

With home games against Mainz and Mönchengladbach, champions Bayer Leverkusen have a great chance to close the gap on leaders Bayern Munich. After a run of five Bundesliga victories before the winter break, plus a 5-0 walloping of RB Salzburg in the Champions League and a hard-fought cup win over Bayern, Xabi Alonso’s side will aim to renew their title defence with vigour. NFL
The number one seeds in each conference have been confirmed. So can the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs deliver another Super Bowl win, which would be their fourth in six years? Or could the NFC’s Detroit Lions, long starved of success with zero Super Bowl appearances in their history, go all the way? Of course, if either of those impressive teams stumbles, there’s a whole host of play-off qualifiers eager to power past them and into the NFL’s showpiece game, which takes place on Sunday 9 February in New Orleans. (And we know you’ll be tuning in for the gridiron action, but it’s worth mentioning that Kendrick Lamar is headlining this year’s half-time show, which should be spectacular.)

Cricket: Men’s Big Bash League
Hampshire captain James Vince is among the most consistently in-demand English players in franchise competitions: he’s played for three teams in the Pakistan Super League, won the Vitality Blast with Hampshire and the Hundred with Southern Brave, and been drafted for both Sydney teams in the Big Bash League, winning it twice with Sydney Sixers. This season he’s back with the Sixers and up among the top run-scorers, demonstrating his T20 prowess with an impressive 101 not out from 58 balls as they beat Melbourne Stars. Could Vince claim a third tournament medal? Find out as the Big Bash continues live on Sky Sports, with the final on 27 January (the day after Australia Day).

Cricket: SA20
This season, five of the six SA20 teams are captained by Proteas stars – Keshav Maharaj, Faf du Plessis, David Miller, Rilee Rossouw and Aiden Markram – while Afghan all-rounder Rashid Khan leads the MI Cape Town team. If you’re looking out for England players, Joe Root was drafted by Paarl Royals, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are with the Super Kings, and Sunrisers have five English players including Zak Crawley and Craig Overton, while Pretoria are coached by former England Test batter Jonathan Trott. Darts: Premier League
After finishing runner-up in last year’s World Darts Championship, Luke Littler proved he was no flash in the pain by winning the 2024 Premier League. This year he arrives in the competition as world champion and we have a sneaking suspicion it’ll take a superhuman effort to prise the trophy away from him. Competing against Littler will be the rest of the PDC Order of Merit top four, namely Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross, as well as wildcard picks Gerwyn Price, Chris Dobey, Nathan Aspinall and the man they call the People’s Champion, Stephen “The Bullet” Bunting.
The 2025 action starts in Belfast on the first Thursday of February and continues every week in a different location until the end of May, when The O2 in London is the venue for the final.

Golf
The regular tours are straight back into the, er, swing of things, with the European Tour in the Middle East and the PGA Tour seeking out warm January weather in California and Arizona. It’s a new competition that catches the eye, though. The Golf League (TGL) is the brainchild of two modern greats of the game, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and comprises indoor face-offs between teams representing six cities around the US: Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco and Jupiter (part of Palm Beach, Florida).
Featuring top players such as Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry, it’ll fit around the regular tournaments, and is tailor-made to bring new fans to the game. The first fixture is between LA and Jupiter, and Sky Sports has lots more live coverage as TGL’s season continues, along with the more traditional tournaments.

Singapore’s state-of-the-art Kallang Tennis Hub hosts a new WTA Tour tournament this January, replacing the Thailand Open in the calendar. The same week, there’s also WTA action from Upper Linz, a tournament with more than a million dollars in prize money, and which was won in 2024 by Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. The stars of the ATP Tour will be at the Sud de France Arena in Montpellier for the Open Occitanie, where Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik is the reigning champ. England’s Roses tested themselves against the world’s best in the final months of 2024 and claimed victories against Australia and Jamaica, as well as winning the Taini Jamison Trophy in New Zealand over three seriously hard-fought games. And there’s more tough opposition to come in February’s Nations Cup, a round-robin featuring South Africa, Uganda and Malawi – the teams ranked fifth to seventh in the world, just behind England in fourth. The first weekend’s games are at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena before the tournament moves to London’s Copper Box for the final matches, and it’s all live on Sky Sports.

Boxing
Still just 22, Berkshire light welterweight Adam Azim is unbeaten in 12 pro fights and is one of the UK’s most hotly tipped prospects, especially after a hugely impressive performance against Ohara Davies in October which he won via an eighth-round stoppage. He’s been frustrated in his attempts to meet Harlem Eubank in the ring: he vacated his European title to avoid a mandatory challenge and fight Eubank instead, but injury put paid to that. However, Azim now has the chance to claim the IBO world title when he takes on veteran Kazakh fighter Sergey Lipinets at Wembley Arena on 1 February, live on Sky Sports.
IBO Super Lightweight Title: Azim v Lipinets
