Football: Premier League

Arsenal v Chelsea in the Premier League, live on Sky Sports this month.

We’re not great believers in the concept of generic “London derbies” – most teams have one local rival they’re desperate to beat, and every fan knows who it is – but there’s no doubt Chelsea’s matches against both Arsenal and Tottenham come with… extra flavour. Arsène Wenger, despite his success, couldn’t beat José Mourinho’s Chelsea for years and the Gunners memorably lost 6-0 to the Blues on the occasion of Wenger’s 1,000th match. The 2007 League Cup final between the clubs ended in three red cards and Mourinho crowing about another Chelsea win (if you can believe that).

As for Spurs, they went 16 years without a league win over Chelsea, whose fans would refer to Tottenham’s old stadium as “Three Point Lane”. Both fixtures are live on Sky Sports this month as Chelsea visit Arsenal and host Spurs: with all three suffering various injury and form problems, it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen, but we’ll be glued to it.

There’s a real derby happening on 6 April when Manchester City visit Old Trafford, where the home team will be desperate to rescue something from their season with a win. And you can enjoy plenty more Premier League action on Sky Sports throughout the month, including more derby action from Anfield on 2 April, and a clash between two of the league’s entertainers when Bournemouth host Brentford.

Football: Scottish Premiership

It was the home defeat to St Mirren that finally put paid to Philippe Clement’s tenure as Rangers manager – but Barry Ferguson’s interim stewardship didn’t get off to a great start, with a win at Kilmarnock followed by another loss at Ibrox, this time to Motherwell. That left them 16 points behind Celtic, a gap that’s surely insurmountable for the blue half of Glasgow.

That said, we’d expect them to fight as hard as ever when the teams meet on 16 March. No matter the disparity between the Old Firm clubs in the table, winning those games is of paramount importance to both. After that, Rangers will be looking to pick up points on the road at Dundee, while Celtic visit St Johnstone.

Football: EFL Cup Final

In 2023, Newcastle reached the EFL Cup final and the match previews were all about the opportunity to break a major trophy drought that stretched all the way back to 1955. Sadly for the club and the fans who travelled to Wembley, they didn’t have enough to overcome Man Utd that day. In 2025, Newcastle once again have underdog status as they prepare to face Liverpool – so could it be different this time?

The Reds are having a remarkable season but it has just started to drift a little recently, with a limp FA Cup exit, below-par Champions League performances and league points dropped. Newcastle have struggled for consistency, but they’ve been impressive at times, not least in the 4-0 aggregate semi-final win over Arsenal. Many may consider this final a foregone conclusion. We’re far from convinced, and we’d not want to bet against the Toon in a one-off game. See who picks up the coveted trophy on 16 March.

Football: Women’s Super League

Aston Villa v Manchester United in the Women’s Super League, live on Sky Sports this month.

Chelsea came dangerously close to losing their unbeaten record at the start of March, requiring a second-half equaliser from Lauren James to come away from Brighton with a point. But they’ve maintained a healthy lead at the top of the WSL and by the time West Ham visit in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the end of March, this phenomenal team will be looking to wrap up the title after another hugely impressive season.

At the time of writing their nearest challengers are Man Utd, who since the start of December have gone on a run of wins that has pushed them firmly into the Champions League qualification places. With England internationals Ella Toone and Grace Clinton dovetailing in midfield – particularly in a satisfying derby win over Man City – and Elisabeth Terland recapturing her goalscoring form, they look well set to repeat their best ever position of runners-up in 2023. You can see their away match at Aston Villa on Sky Sport on 23 March.

Football: EFL Championship

We reckon you’ll need to be over 50 to remember Bristol City in the top flight: they’ve not been there since relegation in 1980, and they’re currently the joint-longest residents of the second tier on 10 seasons (alongside QPR and Preston). In that decade, apart from a play-off near miss when they finished eighth in 2019, they’ve not made much impact.

But this year, despite a slow start (seven draws in their first 12 matches), they’ve steadily found form and are mounting a serious attempt to finish in the all-important top six. Goals have come from Nahki Wells and Albania striker Anis Mehmeti, while Ireland international Jason Knight has been a stalwart in midfield.

They host Norwich in a Friday night game on 14 March. Elsewhere this month, you can see leaders Leeds against Millwall and QPR, while Hillsborough stages a Sheffield derby on 16 March as United strive to keep up with Leeds at the top and Wednesday make every effort to derail their promotion effort.

Football: EFL League One

Cambridge United v Peterborough United in EFL League One, live on Sky Sports this month.

Peterborough have been reliable League One performers in recent years. Promotion in 2021 was followed by immediate relegation from the Championship, but the Posh maintained standards by reaching the playoffs for the next two seasons. This campaign has been a different story. Despite the occasional noteworthy result like a 5-1 win over Blackpool, they’ve struggled to stay above the relegation zone – a factor that’ll add spice to their local derby against Cambridge on 15 March. Cambridge have been in the bottom four all season but, after the return of former head coach Neil Harris, managed a couple of wins which will convince fans that all is not lost.

There’s action from the top of the table this month too as Wycombe – keeping up their promotion challenge despite the departure of manager Matt Bloomfield – visit Rotherham, while play-off candidates Stockport, Leyton Orient and Charlton are all in action, and runaway leaders Birmingham travel to Bristol Rovers.

Football: EFL League Two

Walsall hit the top spot before Christmas, and for a while it looked like it’d be impossible to knock them off. But a sequence of nine consecutive league victories was followed by a run of just two wins in nine games, and as the campaign reaches the final stretch they’re hanging on, while the teams behind them surge towards the summit.

Bradford in particular have been on a good run, including a 3-0 win over Walsall, as midfielder Alex Pattison suddenly found a goalscoring touch. But there were a lot of narrow home wins in that period, so the challenge is to sustain their form as they attempt to overhaul the Saddlers at the top. They go to Accrington on 29 March, a game that’s live on Sky Sports+, while ahead of that you can check on Walsall’s title credentials when they visit in-form Bromley for an evening game on 13 March.

Football: Scottish Women’s League Cup Final

Liv McLoughlin of Rangers, who take on Hibernian in the Scottish Women’s League Cup final, live on Sky Sports.

Rangers have won the League Cup for the past two years and they’re on course to make it a hat-trick after making it to the final. The last team to achieve that? Their opponents, Hibernian, who actually won it for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. These two clubs met in the 2022/23 final, when Rangers came out on top thanks to goals from Lizzie Arnot and sub Kirsty Howat.

Both sides possess forwards with plenty of goals this season – Kathleen McGovern and 20-year-old Scotland international Eilidh Adams for Hibs, the English pair of Katie Wilkinson and Rio Hardy at Rangers – but Blues’ midfield linchpin Liv McLoughlin (pictured) could be crucial to the outcome. Motherwell’s Fir Park ground is the venue.

Football: Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is virtually impossible to predict, apart from Bayern winning the title (with apologies to defending champs Leverkusen, who are looking highly unlikely to repeat that triumph). Heidenheim qualified for Europe last season, but this season they’ve been rooted in the bottom three. Mainz and Freiburg were mid-table mediocrities in 2023/34; in 2024/25 they’re both well placed for a Champions League spot. Meanwhile Borussia Dortmund, the traditional giants and biggest rivals to Bayern, may have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League but domestically, they’re languishing halfway down the table.

Mainz, who visit Dortmund on the final Sunday in March, haven’t finished in the European places since 2016 but this season could well see them in the Champions League for the first time. Goalkeeper Robin Zentner has been in inspired form, while striker Jonathan Burkhardt has registered his best ever goal tally and become the club’s top Bundesliga scorer. Could Bo Henriksen do something even legendary coach Jürgen Klopp couldn’t and lead the Rhinelanders into Europe’s elite competition? Find out with Sky Sports’ live Bundesliga coverage.

Motorsport: Formula One

The Formula One Australian Grand Prix, live on Sky Sports this month.

While it’s awe-inspiring to watch a performance of enduring mastery like Max Verstappen’s as he won four successive drivers’ championships, some fans might find they’re longing for a bit more excitement in the world’s elite motor racing competition. Hope arrived during the back end of the 2024 season. After three and a half years of incredible dominance (including a mind-boggling points total of 575 in 2023), Verstappen went on a 10-race run without taking the chequered flag.

He rallied to take first place in São Paulo and Qatar, winning the title by 63 points – but that wobble will give the other drivers renewed determination ahead of the 2025 season. Britain’s Lando Norris, who finished as runner-up and won four Grands Prix in his McLaren in 2024, might be considered favourite to dethrone the Dutchman. But arguably the more intriguing team is Ferrari, which has installed seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton alongside Charles Leclerc to create an extremely talented driver line-up.

We could well be in for the most competitive season in years and it’s all live on Sky Sports, starting at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit with the race in the early hours of 16 March (it’s repeated in its entirely on Sky Sports F1®/HD (CH 516/506) at 8am if you don’t want to lose sleep over it). Rugby League: Super League

The new Super League season has already thrown up some barely believable results. The first round of fixtures included not one but two golden point victories including the competition’s first ever 1-0 win, when Leigh Leopards’ Gareth O’Brien kicked a drop goal in extra time to gain the points against near neighbours Wigan. Then Salford, who finished two places above St Helens in 2024, were handed an 82-0 shoeing by the Saints, for whom Tristan Sailor scored four tries on debut. It was the biggest winning margin in Super League history.

All that plus the razzmatazz of the Las Vegas showcase – in which Wigan defeated Warrington 48-24 in a hugely entertaining match – means we’re hungry for as much Super League action as possible. The good news is Sky Sports’ comprehensive coverage continues, with every match in March live including a clash between two teams that won all three of their opening three games, Hull KR and Leigh. This is a league, and a sport, that just gets better and better.

Rugby League: NRL Men’s

Melbourne Storm v Penrith Panthers in the NRL, live on Sky Sports this month.

The Panthers and Raiders began their 2025 campaigns in style at the curtain-raiser in Las Vegas, with Canberra particularly impressive in their five-try win over the Warriors. The ACT team haven’t strengthened much in the off-season, with English forward Matty Nicholson from Warrington Wolves their only signing (and he wasn’t involved in Vegas), so the victory will help to justify keeping the existing squad together and bodes well for their season. You can check them out against the Broncos on 15 March.

The Panthers, meanwhile, will be looking to continue their domination of the NRL but they’ll face a test when they travel to Melbourne – who topped the table last season – on 20 March to face the Storm. It’s early days, of course, but this fixture could give us an indication of what’s to come.

Rugby Union: Super Rugby Pacific

After powering through the quarter-finals and semi-finals in last year’s Super Rugby Pacific, Hamilton’s Chiefs came unstuck in the final, when a dominant performance from the Blues of Auckland – featuring three tries from All Blacks wing Caleb Clarke – condemned them to a crushing 41-10 defeat. And it seems that, like Michael Jordan, they took that personally.

The Chiefs started the 2025 season as if on a berserk redemption mission, racking up 49 points against both the Brumbies and Crusaders, and scoring what must have been a satisfying 25-14 win over the Blues in Auckland. They’re going to take some beating this season – but there’s long way to go. Netball: Super League

The Netball Super League, live on Sky Sports this month.

It’s all change for British netball. The Super League has undergone a major revamp for 2025 and is now an eight-team competition featuring new teams based in Birmingham and Nottingham. In a shake-up to long-standing rules and practices, coaches can now call tactical time-outs and in certain periods of the game, players will be able to score a two-point shot from designated zones on court.

Losing by five points or fewer will gain a team a league point, to incentivise players to keep battling until the end of a game, while matches will no longer be allowed to end level with 10 minutes of extra time added to find a winner.

So there’s plenty to keep everyone gripped in the season ahead, and that’s before we’ve even got to exciting new signings like Emily Andrew, who joins London Mavericks from Melbourne Vixens, and Gabrielle Sinclair, who has left Melbourne Mavericks to play for Birmingham Panthers, while Nottingham Forest have signed Uganda defender Falidah Kadondi. Cricket: Women’s Premier League

Delhi Capitals were the first team to qualify for this WPL season’s play-offs, the two-time champions securing their place with a crushing nine-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Opening batter Shafali Verma continued her excellent form with an unbeaten 80 from 43 balls, supported by Jess Jonassen’s 61. With spinner Jonassen and medium-pacer Shikha Pandey bagging plenty of wickets too – Jonassen getting a rare T20 four-for against UP Warriorz – it looks like Meg Lanning’s team will take some beating.

That said, they qualified directly for the final in 2024 and were strong favourites, only to lose out to Royal Challengers. This month you can see the eliminator and the final of this exciting competition live on Sky Sports.

Darts: Premier League

The two Lukes, world champ Littler and world number one Humphries, surged to the upper echelons of the table with early wins in this year’s Premier League. However, they came unstuck in Dublin where Gerwyn Price belied his recent uncertain form to see off both of them before disposing of Nathan Aspinall in the night’s final. It just goes to show the depth of talent in this year’s competition, where anyone can win on a given evening – a fact underlined by the throwing of a phenomenal 57 180s in Exeter in Week 4.

The competition continues this month with contests at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena and the Utilita Arenas in Cardiff and Newcastle, before leaving UK shores again to head for the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. Make sure you tune in on Thursdays for some absolutely world-class darts.

Golf

Golf superstar Scottie Scheffler in The Players Championship, live on Sky Sports this month.

It’s against the law (we think) to mention The Players Championship without referring to it as “the unofficial fifth major”. It’s the most prestigious tournament in the first quarter of the year – and the prize money, the biggest of any event in world golf, adds to that – and world number one Scottie Scheffler has won it for the past two years. Jack Nicklaus is the only golfer ever to win it three times in its 51-year history, and no one has won it three times in a row. Could the New Jerseyite score an unprecedented hat-trick? He’ll have to beat a super-strong field, including Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, to do so. The action takes place at the Sawgrass Club in Florida on 13-16 March.

There’s plenty more top-class golf on Sky Sports in the coming month, with the European Tour in Singapore and New Delhi, and the LPGA’s only matchplay tournament from Las Vegas, where Nelly Korda is the defending champ.

Tennis

With prize money of over a million dollars for both singles champions, Indian Wells is among the most prestigious and lucrative tennis tournaments outside the majors and you’ll see all the top players contesting it on Sky Sports this month. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Świątek are defending the titles they won in 2024.

It’s also the event that heralds the end of the hard-court season. After the Miami Open (which also boasts big prizes and big names), it’s on to clay for the WTA and ATP tours, starting with competitions in the USA, Colombia, Morocco and Romania. From April, the tours focus on Europe as the players prepare for the biggest clay-court event of all at Roland-Garros.

Boxing

You never know when or where a future world heavyweight champ will emerge. Richard Torrez Jr is relatively small for this category, at just 1.88m (6’ 2”), but he impressed on his way to a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and he’s unbeaten in his 12 fights since turning pro. Just 25, his peak years are well ahead of him, and he faces experienced Italian boxer Guido Vianello at the Palms Casino in Vegas in April, live on Sky Sports – we’re expecting a serious test of his credentials.

Pool: European Open

The first major event in the Matchroom Pool season is a real doozy, featuring a whopping 256 entrants including the top 128 in the world rankings. Denmark’s Mickey Krause won the tournament in 2024, beating Johann Chua in the final, and the Filipino player – now number five in the world – will be keen to go one step further this year. The action takes place at the Hill Hotel in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and you can follow the final four rounds live on Sky Sports.
