Crucial football matches come thick and fast at this time of year, from Man City v Liverpool in the Premier League to Sheffield United v Leeds in the Championship, and from Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga to the EFL Trophy semi-finals. With dozens of games live on Sky Sports this month, including the Scottish Premiership, Women’s Super League and Leagues One and Two, you can see how all the top competitions shape up as we head towards the business end of the season.

A season that’s just starting is rugby league’s Super League, as 2024 quadruple winners Wigan Warriors set about defending their title – and every game is live on Sky Sports, all the way to the Grand Final in October. If you’re a big fan of the oval ball, you can also enjoy NRL rugby league and Super Rugby Pacific rugby union on Sky Sports.

In cricket, this month brings the ICC Champions Trophy and the Women’s Premier League, while there’s a huge all-British world title boxing clash to watch too. And with some brilliant golf, darts and tennis in the schedules too, it’s another packed month of super live action on Sky Sports.

Football: Premier League

In the past seven seasons, Man City and Liverpool have won all the Premier League titles. But while City have clearly had the best of the title battles, with six trophies to Liverpool’s one, the actual league matches between the two since the start of 2017/18 have been fairly even: City have won five and Liverpool four, with six draws.

So although the Reds have streaked ahead at the top and are firm favourites to win the league this season, it may not have much bearing on the outcome of their clash on 23 February. Despite their inconsistent form, City will have the determination, quality and belief to put a dent in Liverpool’s aspirations to claim the trophy they currently hold. We can’t wait for this mouthwatering meeting.

Apart from that significant match-up, there are crucial games throughout the month on Sky Sports. Liverpool are also at home to Wolves, while Spurs and Man Utd will both be aiming to shake up their disappointing seasons when they meet. Key matches for the European qualification places include Aston Villa v Chelsea and West Ham v Newcastle, while Arsenal will be aiming to maintain their own title challenge at Old Trafford on 9 March.

Football: Scottish Premiership

Often the most interesting aspect of the Scottish Premiership is the race for third place behind the two Glasgow megaclubs. Last season that was won by Hearts, who took a creditable seven points from the Old Firm to secure European football. After a promising but ultimately unsuccessful UEFA Conference League journey, Neil Critchley’s team will look to kick-start their league form, and face a home game against Rangers on 16 February.

The Jambos will be hoping their opponents are still reeling from their stunning Scottish Cup elimination by Queen’s Park, rather than out to take revenge on the nearest victims. The game is live on Sky Sports, as are Hearts’ matches away to St Johnstone the following Sunday and the Edinburgh derby at Easter Road on 2 March.

Football: Women’s Super League

There’s no margin for error when you’re mounting a title challenge in the WSL. Arsenal lost just two of their first 13 games and their goals-against tally was in single figures, but they still found themselves staring forlornly at an unbeaten Chelsea disappearing into the distance. And with the Blues playing first (away to Brighton) in the WSL double-header on Sky Sports on 2 March, Sonia Bompastor’s side may be even further ahead by the time the Gunners kick off at home to West Ham.

Arsenal will be determined to keep up the pressure by gaining as many points as possible, and new signing Chloe Kelly will add creativity. Ahead of that big Sunday you can see Man City, whose title challenge came off the rails with three defeats in four games, at home to Liverpool.

Football: EFL Championship

The Championship is such a competitive division that almost every game is absolutely massive. Sheffield United v Leeds on 24 February, a clash between the top two with the added spice of being a Yorkshire derby, is an obvious one – but Leeds also face surprise package Sunderland and perennial contenders West Brom this month. And at the time of writing, just seven points cover the positions from fifth to 14th, so a few wins in a row could catapult, say, QPR (home to Derby on 14 February) or Sheffield Wednesday (away to Burnley on 21 February) into the play-off mix.

At the bottom, Plymouth will surely be buoyed by their FA Cup win over Liverpool as they attempt to hoist themselves out of the relegation zone with home games against Millwall and Cardiff. Meanwhile, the result of Oxford v Portsmouth could be key as both sides aim to pull clear of the bottom three, and Luton will be even more desperate than normal to beat local rivals Watford. It’s six-pointers everywhere you look this month in this fascinating league. Don’t miss a moment on Sky Sports.

Football: EFL League One

It might seem like a fever dream but Huddersfield Town were in the Premier League as recently as 2019 – and if anyone outside the club’s fanbase can name the manager in charge when they went down, we’ll be seriously impressed – and were within 90 minutes of a return in 2022 when they reached the Championship play-off final. Relegation followed in 2024, unfortunately, but the Terriers are making a decent fist of their campaign to return to the second tier under Michael Duff.

After a ropey start, they’ve been a fixture in the top six since October thanks to a 16-game unbeaten streak – but the new year brought a wobble with three straight defeats. You can see Huddersfield away at Wigan on 25 February on Sky Sports, as they try to regain their upward momentum. (The relegation coach was Jan Siewert, now at Greuther Fürth in the German second tier.)

Football: EFL League Two

Since relegation in 2019, Walsall have had a tough time in League Two, flirting with relegation from the EFL in 2021/22 and struggling to get anywhere near the top six under a succession of managers. However, their American owners hit upon the right formula with the appointment of Mat Sadler as head coach ahead of this season, and January saw the team break a club record by winning eight league games in a row. The title seems a formality, let alone promotion, but they’ll have to do it without top scorer Nathan Lowe, who’s been recalled by parent club Stoke.

This month they’re away to Morecambe and Cheltenham, live on Sky Sports, in the space of three days. You can also see fellow high flyers Doncaster and Notts County, both of whom face Grimsby.

Football: EFL Trophy – Semi-finals

Bradford City are the only League Two team left in this year’s EFL Trophy at the semi-final stage, and Graham Alexander’s men were rewarded with an away draw at League One leaders Birmingham. The Bantams will hope that their opponents are focused on promotion back to the Championship, allowing them to score an upset and earn a trip to Wembley on 13 April. In the other semi-final, Peterborough will travel to face Birminghams promotion rivals Wrexham.

Football: Bundesliga

Surely he’s going to do it now. All English football fans know that Harry Kane has gone his entire career without a winner’s medal in club or international football. Almost unbelievably, his first season at Bayern coincided with the Bavarians’ first failure to win the Bundesliga in 12 years – but this term they seem to be progressing serenely towards recapturing the title. Kane is out on his own as top scorer in Germany and his team-mates, including former Crystal Palace winger Michael Olisé, are in scintillating form.

If Bayer Leverkusen, defending champs and Bayern’s nearest rivals in the league, are going to prevent that happening, they absolutely have to win the clash between the top two on 15 February. It’s going to be a tense one, and the first order of business for Leverkusen must be to stop Kane. There’s lots more live Bundesliga action on Sky Sports this month, including Bayern at home to third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who have just lost their top scorer Omar Marmoush to Manchester City.

Rugby League: Super League

Wigan won a historic quadruple in 2024 – Super League, League Leaders’ Shield, Challenge Cup and World Club Championship – but that didn’t tell the whole story of the season. Teams that had established themselves among the elite struggled, such as St Helens and Leeds Rhinos, while the unfancied likes of Leigh Leopards and Salford Red Devils made the play-offs, and Hull Kingston Rovers went all the way to the Grand Final for the first time in the Super League era.

All of that means that there’s a huge group of teams determined to knock the Warriors off their perch as the new Super League season begins. And you can get a front-row seat for the action, as Sky Sports brings you every single game live, starting with the champions at home to the much-improved Leopards. Can Leigh pull off a result that will set the cat among the pigeons early in 2025?

On 21 February the action is at the temporarily renamed Luke Littler Stadium, as Warrington celebrate the success of their local hero for their opening home fixture against Catalans Dragons. Then, at the start of March, Super League goes international as the game between Wigan and Warrington comes live from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, part of a weekend of rugby league that also includes the NRL season opener (see below) and a clash between England and Australia’s women’s teams.

Rugby League: NRL

Can anyone stop the Panthers? The team from Penrith in western Sydney have won the NRL championship for each of the past four seasons, seeing off all comers with their speed, power and strategy under coach Ivan Cleary. They’ve strengthened by signing Isaiah Papali’i and rising star Blaize Talagi, and they start the season among the favourites – although interestingly, most bookies have Melbourne Storm, last year’s runners-up, slightly ahead. After the All Star games between the Indigenous and Māori teams, you can see the Panthers’ first match of the new season when they face the Sharks in Las Vegas, which hosts the NRL’s opening games for the second year in a row.

Rugby Union: Super Rugby Pacific

Like MMA fighter Taylor Swift, Western Force back Harry Potter has heard all the jokes. But the English-born, Aussie-raised rugby star has been in seriously good form in the past year, culminating in his Wallabies debut against Scotland in November. The Force missed out on the play-offs last year – so could Potter’s energy elevate them from also-ran status? They take on Moana Pasifika at Perth’s HBF Park in the first round of the new Super Rugby Pacific season. Ahead of that match, Auckland’s Blues, who defeated the Chiefs of Hamilton in last year’s final, start their title defence against the same opponents.

Cricket: ICC Champions Trophy

The England men’s ODI team are among the eight qualifiers for this tournament, which is returning to the cricket calendar for the first time since 2017. And though recent results haven’t been the best, they’ve undoubtedly got the talent to do well, with Phil Salt and Jos Buttler still among the world’s most effective batters in this format, and spinner Adil Rashid always dangerous. They face Afghanistan, South Africa and Australia in Group B. Pakistan are both the hosts (with some matches in the UAE) and the champions, and Mohammad Rizwan will be aiming to lead his team to a successful defence of the trophy on home ground.

This tournament is no respecter of reputation or profile. Luke Littler might have arrived at the opening night of the 2025 Premier League as the newly crowned world champion, but he lost his first match in Belfast, taken down 6-5 by Michael van Gerwen. The Dutchman was then on the wrong end of the same scoreline in the night’s semi-final, losing out to Luke Humphries, who proceeded to beat Chris Dobey in the final and go straight to the top of the table. Can Humphries stay there? Or will one of his rivals knock him straight off? It’s a competition that takes no prisoners, and the four events this month in Scotland, Ireland and England could see everything change.

Golf

The European Tour swings through Africa this month, with tournaments in Nairobi, Durban and Johannesburg. South Africa’s Dean Burmester hit a purple patch this time last year, winning back-to-back events in his home country. Over on the PGA Tour, expect to see big names at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which has been won by world No1 Scottie Scheffler in two of the past three years.

On the European women’s tour, the 2025 Aramco Team Series gets under way in Riyadh, while the stars of the LPGA are in Asia for the Honda LPGA Thailand and the HSBC Championship in Singapore. It’s a packed month with loads of action from a range of global locations – plus the innovative indoor TGL competition continues, live from the state-of-the-art SoFi Center in Palm Beach, Florida.

Boxing

Some of the great names of British boxing have fought at the Royal Albert Hall, including Henry Cooper, Prince Naseem and Lennox Lewis, as well as Muhammad Ali – and this month it hosts a world title bout that will be as eagerly awaited as any. Britain has produced two of the greatest female boxers of all time in Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price, and they meet at the historic London venue on 7 March with three welterweight belts on the line. We’re expecting fireworks.

Also this month, Ukraine’s Denys Berinchyk defends his WBO lightweight title against US challenger Keyshawn Davis – and with both men unbeaten, something’s got to give. There’s also a Monday morning bantamweight bill featuring WBC champion Junto Nakatani and WBA champ Seiya Tsutsumi, live from Tokyo’s Ariake Arena on 24 February.

Tennis

With some impressive recent results, Jack Draper looks like he could be the next big British tennis star – but frustratingly, he was forced to drop out of his Australian Open fourth-round clash with Carlos Alcaraz owing to injury. Now he faces a race to be fit for Indian Wells, the next big event in the tennis calendar. If his recovery goes well, expect to see him in Qatar or Dubai ahead of the California tournament. British women’s No1 Katie Boulter is scheduled to be in action in the Middle East, although Emma Raducanu continues to battle her own fitness problems. There’s a ton of tennis to enjoy from around the world on Sky Sports Tennis and Sky Sports+ this month.
