Football: Premier League

A top-half finish would have meant a great season for Nottingham Forest, who only just escaped relegation last year. However, this term has gone so well for the club that people are starting to talk about them “doing a Leicester”. Forest fans probably won’t appreciate the reference to their East Midlands rivals’ title win in 2016 but they certainly appreciate their team’s successes under coach Nuno Espírito Santo, who has turned them into a super-effective winning machine.

Veteran striker Chris Wood has snatched the headlines with his goalscoring exploits, and Nikola Milenković has arrived to form a formidable defensive partnership with Murillo. But after trying a few keepers who didn’t inspire confidence, their most important player this season has arguably been Matz Sels. The Belgian stopper wasn’t heralded when he joined from Strasbourg in January 2024 but Nuno, a former keeper himself, has brought out the very best in him. Watch Forest in action at home to Brighton this month on TNT Sports as they strive to secure European qualification – at the very least.

Football: UEFA Champions League

The final matchdays of this season’s Champions League are looming, and most eyes are on the underperforming teams – notably Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and Man City, who are all in danger of finishing outside the top 16. That would mean not only failure to progress automatically to the knock-out stage proper, but also that they won’t be seeded for the play-offs and will face tough opponents. But there’s a worse potential fate – finishing in the bottom 12 and going out of Europe altogether.

PSG are in the most danger of elimination, and they’re having a strange season: imperious as usual in Ligue 1, where they’re still unbeaten halfway through the campaign, but strangely flat and low-scoring in Europe. If they’re to qualify from the league phase, they’ll have to do it without January signings such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who won’t be eligible till after this stage ends. The final matches kick off simultaneously on 29 January, and you can follow all five British sides (including the huge clash between Aston Villa and Celtic) live on TNT Sports.

Football: UEFA Europa League

It’ll invariably be dubbed “the Battle of Britain” but Man Utd and Rangers won’t be interested in any kind of island supremacy when they meet at Old Trafford on 23 January – they’ll be laser-focused on qualification. In the Europa League table, both are hovering around the cut-off point where automatic progress to the knock-out phase becomes a play-off place, and three points will take either significantly closer to the last 16.

Tottenham are in a similar position as they travel to Germany to take on Hoffenheim, and the final round of group games is on 30 January, with Rangers and Spurs at home while United are in Romania. Follow all the games on TNT Sports.

Qualifying Play-offs, 1st Leg
Thursday 13 February, TNT Sports

Football: UEFA Conference League

The Conference League has qualifying play-offs this month, and Chelsea are safely through to the knockout stage, but Hearts, The New Saints and Larne were sadly eliminated – Hearts, agonisingly, on goals scored. The tie we’ll be looking out for is Molde against Shamrock Rovers, who finished 10th after losing only one of their six league-stage matches (to Chelsea). That means the League of Ireland side are seeded and will have home advantage in the second leg. But first comes a trip to Norway, where their opponents will be playing their first competitive match since mid-December.

Football: Serie A

After a relatively slow start, Inter have roared back into the race for the scudetto thanks to a run of six straight victories over Christmas that included a 5-0 win at Verona and a 6-0 thrashing of Lazio in Rome. This month, though, they’ll come up against AC Milan at San Siro where their old rivals, although well off the pace and struggling to get into the European qualifying places, will do their damnedest to derail Inter’s title challenge. And at the time of writing it looks like AC Milan may be recruiting at least one Premier League star in an effort to kickstart their campaign… Lots of stories, one hotly contested derby match. Straight after that match, you can see front-runners Napoli away to Roma.

Football: A-League Men

It’s seriously tight at the top in the men’s A-League, with just a handful of points between the top six teams. The fixture that catches the eye this month is Sydney v Adelaide United, where the home team are likely to feature both twinkle-toed former Brazil international Douglas Costa and former Nottingham Forest forward Joe Lolley; the Englishman is among the A-League’s leading scorers this term, with a hat-trick against Perth a couple of weeks ago.

Meanwhile Adelaide fans have a new goalscorer to idolise in 20-year-old striker Archie Goodwin, who joined from Newcastle Jets this season and has been terrorising opposition defences. Could he be the next breakout Aussie football star?

Football: A-League Women

When Australia co-hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, just two of the national squad were based in the A-League – and both Cortnee Vine and Clare Hunt left soon afterwards. But the Matildas are now picking more young, home-based players, and their recent squad included Karly Roestbakken, Bryleeh Henry, Leah Davidson and Laura Hughes: exciting talents, all 23 or under, and all at Melbourne City, who are leading the way in this season’s A-League. You can see City in action against Western United on 4 February, with lots more action from the league throughout the month.

Cricket: Women’s Ashes

It’s been a decade since England’s women last had their hands on the Ashes – and that long stretch is going to get longer, after Australia won the first four matches of this mixed-format series to retain the trophy. England were particularly frustrated after the second one-day game, when they creditably bowled the Aussies out for 180, only to fall just 21 agonising runs short of the target despite a brave 47 not out from Amy Jones. With T20s and a sole Test to come, Heather Knight and her team will be battling as hard as they can against this superb Australia team until the series’ very end.

Cricket: Internationals

For England’s men, the last white-ball tour brought an ODI series defeat and a T20 series win, as both they and West Indies struggled to find consistency. Up next? Arguably the toughest challenge in world cricket as they head to the subcontinent to take on India, currently sitting top of the world rankings in both formats.

England will face some devastating spells of bowling from Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and co, so top batters like Joe Root and Harry Brook will need to find their best form – and a regular contribution from the mercurial Liam Livingstone would help too. You can also see Test and ODI action from Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka live on TNT Sports this month, plus the West Indies v Bangladesh women’s white-ball series.

Cricket: Super Smash Leagues

There’s plenty of entertainment on show in New Zealand’s T20 competition, where the women’s and men’s matches are presented as double bills. You’ll need a strong constitution and/or keep unusual hours to enjoy all the action, but you’ll be rewarded if you do, with NZ internationals such as Martin Guptill, Amelia Kerr, Will Young and Suzie Bates starring. Both Otago teams looked strong in the early stages, so could we see a double Super Smash triumph for the southern province?

Rugby Union: Premiership

Gloucester finished second bottom of the Premiership table last season, and didn’t start 2024/25 well – but they’ve bounced back from early losses and put themselves firmly in contention for the top four. Argentina international Santiago Carreras has been deadly with his kicks in the last few rounds of fixtures and has scored a couple of tries too, with Welsh backs Max Llewellyn and Joshua Hathaway also contributing. Among their main play-off qualification rivals are Leicester Tigers, who they face at Kingsholm in a Saturday afternoon live game on TNT Sports this month.

Rugby Union: Women’s Premiership

Exeter Chiefs’ title challenge faltered before Christmas when they followed 10 straight wins with home defeats against Gloucester-Hartpury and Bristol Bears. But the top teams are still within reach for the Chiefs, and you can find out if they can make up the gap in their two upcoming matches against London teams Harlequins and Saracens, live on TNT Sports. Ahead of that, strugglers Leicester will attempt to boost their campaign when they host local rivals Loughborough.

Rugby Union: SVNS Championship

Fiji have traditionally been strong in men’s sevens, but the last of their four world titles came in 2019, and they haven’t finished higher than third since. This year they got off to a flyer by winning the first round of matches in Dubai, and they top the table heading into the third round, which takes place in Perth, Australia. Mojo well and truly restored. Their closest challengers right now are Spain.

In the women’s event, New Zealand are leading the way, but Australia are hot on their heels and will fancy their chances of overtaking their rivals in front of a home crowd. You’ll need to get up early, but you can enjoy three straight days of fast-paced sevens action at the end of January on TNT Sports.

MMA: UFC

Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland put on a middleweight championship bout for the ages when they faced off at UFC 297 a year ago. It was named Fight Of The Night against some stiff opposition, and the result couldn’t have been closer – Du Plessis won on a split decision and each judge’s verdict had just one point between the fighters. So UFC fans will be licking their lips for the rematch, which takes place this month at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Also on the bill is a strawweight championship bout between Zhang Weili and Tatiana Suarez.

The week before there’s a Fight Night in Riyadh, headlined by a middleweight bout between former UFC champ Israel Adesanya and Nassourdine Imavov (look out for the early start time). A week later the UFC returns to Vegas for more middleweight action, this time with Jared Cannonier and Gregory Rodrigues, alongside a featherweight clash between Calvin Kattar and Youssef Zalal.

Boxing

Derek Chisora has been a mainstay of British heavyweight boxing for more than a decade without ever quite getting his hands on a world title – the closest he came was defeat to Tyson Fury in a bout for the WBC belt in 2022. Now in his 40s, he’s taking on Sweden’s Otto Wallin at the Co-op Arena in Manchester, a fight billed as “The Last Dance” – so could this be Chisora’s final appearance in the ring? It’s his 49th pro fight, so fans will hope he can’t resist the temptation to get to 50. It’s live on TNT Sports this February.

Motorsport: World Rally Championship

Rallying is back for 2025 and starting in the most glamorous possible location. All right, the teams don’t race through the streets of Monte-Carlo as they do in the F1 Grand Prix, but the event start line is in the city’s Place du Casino before the cars head out towards Gap on the edge of the Alps.

Having sat out part of last season, former world champion pair Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen are back for the full schedule, and expected to compete strongly against 2024 winners Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe. Britain is represented once again by Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin, who have now finished WRC runners-up four times.

Motorsport: Formula E Championship

Formula E has a reputation for being unpredictable, but that looked in jeopardy when defending champion Pascal Wehrlein qualified on pole in both this season’s races so far. Would the German cruise serenely through the season? Well, in São Paulo, Jaguar’s Mitch Evans glided through the ranks from the very back of the grid to claim the victory, while in Mexico City it was Great Britain’s Oliver Rowland who claimed the glory after a skilful drive in his Nissan. With 14 rounds to come, there’s plenty more excitement on the way in this Formula E season, starting with two races in Saudi Arabia on 14 and 15 February.

Basketball: NBA

Since LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in 2018, they haven’t troubled the play-offs. That’s all changed this season. New coach Kenny Atkinson has transformed the Cavs’ fortunes and after starting the season with a record 15-game winning streak, they’re way out in front in the Eastern Conference, and topping the points-per-game table too. With the likes of guard Darius Garland and center Evan Mobley in imperious form, they’re going to take some catching. You can see them against the Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks on TNT Sports this month, along with plenty more games from the NBA.
