All about murder mystery drama I, Jack Wright on U&Alibi

A tragic suicide or cold-blooded murder? That’s what a team of investigators are trying to uncover within the murky Wright family in this new drama starring Nikki Amuka-Bird and John Simm

It starts out simple enough. The shocking suicide of high-powered businessman Jack Wright (Trevor Eve, Waking The Dead) leaves his family devastated. However, when Jack’s will reveals the earth-shattering news that his widow (Nikki Amuka-Bird, Citadel) and two youngest children are now penniless, dogged police detective DCI Morgan (Harry Lloyd, Wolf Hall) suspects that there’s foul play afoot. Yikes.

And there’s plenty of motivation for murder in the Wright family ranks. Jack was a ruthless man who caused pain wherever he went – beginning with his placid ex-wife Rose (Gemma Jones, Bridget Jones’ Diary) who he left for a younger woman, and continuing with their eldest son and black sheep of the family Gray (John Simm, Grace) who blamed his father for his addiction issues, and second-born John (Daniel Rigby, Flowers), who was bullied into joining the family business and desperately wanted to reclaim his life.

Sabrina Bartlett, John Simm, Zoë Tapper and Daniel Rigby in I, Jack Wright.

That’s the premise for Chris Lang’s newest series, whose credentials include huge hit dramas such as Unforgotten and The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe. It looks like his latest offering is going to pack just as big a punch: as Lang says, “I, Jack Wright is an unusual hybrid because it’s a family saga, a thriller and a courtroom drama.”

Another unusual aspect is that the death isn’t the incident that sets the plot in motion. “The will hearing is where the story really starts because it’s in this room that everyone’s lives are changed forever – whether they gain incredible financial preferment or whether they have everything that they thought they were going to get taken away from them.” We’re hooked already.

Harry Lloyd leads the investigation as DCI Morgan in I, Jack Wright.

Also among the cast are Zoë Tapper (Grace) as Jack’s money-hungry daughter-in-law Georgia, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis (Becoming Elizabeth) as Jack’s sole grandchild Emily, and James Fleet (The Feud), Sabrina Bartlett (Bridgerton), Liz Kingman (Borderline), Rakhee Thakrar (Sex Education) and Percelle Ascott (The Innocents) in supporting roles.

With wild theories about Jack’s death circling and the race for his millions drawing to a close, will the detectives be able to uncover the truth behind his demise before it’s too late? Catch up on the series so far in On Demand > U&Alibi or Apps > U or weekly at 9pm on U&Alibi HD (CH 114).
