December premieres on Sky Cinema

All the best new premieres to watch on Sky Cinema this month, including Timothée Chalamet in the delightful musical Wonka

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

All right, it’s not technically a Christmas movie, but we believe the charmingly chocolatey Wonka – premiering this month on Sky Cinema – will soon become a firm festive family favourite, with its irresistibly sweet mix of singalong songs, brilliant cast, beautiful sets and a memorably grumpy Oompa-Loompa. And alongside that treat, there’s something for everyone this month, with monster mayhem in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, animated adventures in Kung Fu Panda 4, the chilling A Quiet Place: Day One and more.

Also on Sky Cinema in December you’ll find a superb selection of Christmas movies, including classics like Elf, It’s A Wonderful Life, Love Actually, Arthur Christmas and Gremlins. And if you’ve been too busy over the past few months to keep up with all the new premieres on Sky Cinema, scroll down to see our round-up of all the latest titles available in On Demand.

Don’t have Sky Cinema? You can find out about our Sky Cinema package and upgrade here.

Read on to find out what’s new on Sky Cinema this coming month.

Monkey Man

Available Friday 29 November in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 18

British actor Dev Patel went from teen drama Skins to starring roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Lion, and now he has co-written, produced and directed Monkey Man, a delirious revenge thriller. Patel also stars as Kid, who saw his village burned down as a child and now works in an underground fight club as he awaits the opportunity for vengeance on those responsible – but when things don’t go to plan, he’s forced to go on the run. It’s an audacious and dynamic action movie, energetically directed by Patel, who’s clearly a film-making talent to be reckoned with.

Absolution

Available from Saturday 30 November in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

There are few things more reliably entertaining in a movie than Liam Neeson in his patented grizzled-action-hero mode – but Absolution offers a twist on this, and not just because Neeson has a moustache this time out. Instead of a wronged man seeking revenge, he’s an ageing mob enforcer who discovers he’s got a serious illness and resolves to redeem his sins, starting with his estranged daughter. But there could be one last job to do for his sinister boss (Ron Perlman, The Capture). Explosive and gripping.

The American Society Of Magical Negroes

Available from Sunday 1 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

Aron (Justice Smith, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) is a young Black man who’s always trying to make white people feel comfortable. But he’s shocked when he’s recruited by an organisation – the society of the title – whose mission is to do just that, in an attempt to maintain a social balance. Aron is assigned to Jason (Drew Tarver), only for problems to arise when they both develop feelings for Lizzie (An-Li Bogan) and the society insists he puts Jason’s needs first… No group is spared a skewering in this inventive satire on racial politics from writer/director Kobi Libii.

Wonka

Available from Friday 6 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

From the creative team behind Paddington and Paddington 2, this origin story for Roald Dahl’s eccentric chocolatier is a crowd-pleasing delight that made half a billion pounds at the box office. Young Willy (Timothée Chalamet, Dune) arrives in the big city with big dreams, only to be ripped off and generally abused. Left with only a positive attitude and belief in his own chocolate-making genius – plus a friend in plucky orphan Noodle (Calah Lane) – he’s determined to succeed. With wonderful songs, solid laughs and lots of fun supporting actors from Keegan-Michael Key to Olivia Colman to a hilarious Hugh Grant, Wonka is an effortlessly charming treat.

Sweethearts

Available from Saturday 7 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

This appealing romcom casts Kiernan Shipka (Twisters) and Nico Hiraga (Booksmart) as best friends starting out at university. They’re both trying to keep their high school romances going long-distance but there are just too many obstacles, so they head home for a Thanksgiving party to get the break-ups over with. It gets messy, and the pair’s night progresses in a not-entirely-unexpected but decidedly romantic direction… Look out for a scene-stealing performance from comedian Caleb Hearon as the party host.

A Sudden Case Of Christmas

Available from Sunday 8 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

Warm tributes were paid to Danny DeVito on his recent 80th birthday, and the much-loved star of Batman Returns, Matilda and cult sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is in top form in this festive comedy. He’s the owner of a hotel in Italy whose family are visiting – and bringing bad news. When 10-year-old Claire (Antonella Rose, star of this year’s horror hit Terrifier 3) learns her parents are separating, she insists on one final Christmas celebration together in the hope that the holiday fun might rekindle their romance. Even though it’s August.

The Night Before Christmas In Wonderland

Available from Friday 13 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

Weaving Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice stories into a Christmas movie, this British animated film is perfect yuletide family entertainment. Jolly old Saint Nick (Gerard Butler, How To Train Your Dragon) is about to embark on his annual gift-delivering journey when he receives a last-minute letter from the Princess of Hearts, whose Christmas-hating mother the Queen (Emilia Clark, Last Christmas) has banned the holiday. The red-suited hero heads for Wonderland to save the day with some assistance from Alice (Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley).

Abigail

Available from Saturday 14 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 18

Short of snow this Christmas? Here’s a film that will chill you to the bone. A group of criminals, including former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens and Scream VI’s Melissa Barrera, kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crime lord and demand a $50 million ransom. But as the bodies start to pile up in the mansion where they’re holding her captive, it becomes clear they’ve, um, bitten off more than they can chew. Alisha Weir, who starred in Matilda: The Musical, plays a very different young girl here.

Coup!

Available from Sunday 15 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert TBC

At the height of the 1918 flu epidemic, wealthy radical writer Jay Horton (Billy Magnussen, The Franchise) hires a new cook, Floyd Monk (Peter Sarsgaard, The Lost Daughter), who’s tasked with feeding the household. Times may be difficult and harvests sparse, but Horton insists all food must be vegetarian. Monk has other ideas, and what starts as rule-breaking turns into open rebellion among the staff, at which point Horton discovers he may not be as progressive as he thought. A witty and savage satirical comedy.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

Available from Friday 20 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

After the events of 2022’s Godzilla V Kong, an uneasy peace exists on Earth, with Kong living in seclusion and Godzilla seeing off the pesky monsters who regularly bring the havoc. But nothing lasts forever, and when a lost subterranean tribe is unearthed, it transpires they hold the key to unleashing the mighty Mothra. Are the titular titans ready to deal with that? Eye-popping effects and thrilling creature fight scenes add up to a roaring good time in this monster blockbuster. Just FYI, if you’re wondering how to pronounce the “X” in the title, it’s silent.

Kung Fu Panda 4

Available in December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

Skadoosh! Permanently peckish panda Po (Jack Black, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) is back for a fourth instalment of kung fu heroics, and this time around destiny requires him to step up and become a spiritual leader. That means he needs to train up a new Dragon Warrior to replace him – and fast, because the shape-shifting sorceress Chameleon (Viola Davis, The Woman King) plans to bring back all the villains Po has vanquished. Accompanied by the sneaky, quick-witted corsac fox Zhen (Awkwafina, Jumanji: The Next Level) he’s off on another epic quest in this action-packed, entertaining animated sequel.

A Quiet Place: Day One

Available in December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

In A Quiet Place and its sequel, we saw how people managed to survive alongside the sound-sensitive alien invaders – but what happened when they first arrived? In this prequel, a terminally ill woman makes her way through a devastated New York with a couple of helpful strangers and a cat. When the bridges to Manhattan are blown up to stop the monsters spreading, they realise they’re on their own. Lupita Nyong’o (Us), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) and Alex Wolff (Hereditary) star in this creepy, suspense-filled chiller, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig).

ISS

Available in December in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

When American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts come together on the International Space Station, it’s symbolic of peaceful co-operation. That’s until, hundreds of miles below on Earth, war breaks out. The two crews are suddenly enemies, and what started as collaboration swiftly becomes a tense, hostile race to survive. Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Messina (Based On A True Story) lead the NASA contingent, with Pilou Asbæk (Game Of Thrones) and Costa Ronin (The Americans) on the other side.
