Cillian Murphy
28 Days Later, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 18. Also available in HD
After Jim (Murphy) wakes up in hospital to discover a mysterious virus has turned most of the UK’s population into violent marauders, he joins a group of survivors in their search for refuge. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, this blood-splattered, white-knuckle scarefest raised the bar for horror movies in the early noughties.
Colin Farrell
Total Recall, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12. Also available in HD
Farrell steps into the (massive) shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger in a remake of the sci-fi classic from the mind of Philip K Dick. Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a blue-collar factory worker who suspects he might actually be a spy when he visits a company that deals in fake memory implants. Soon he’s on the run from the police…
Brendan Gleeson
Gangs Of New York, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 18. Also available in HD
Gleeson takes his place among an all-star cast in Martin Scorsese’s epic drama about both a young man’s quest to avenge the death of his father and the building of New York City amid a backdrop of bloody violence in the mid-1800s. Brutal and breathtaking in equal measure, this study of US history is a real eye-opener.
Maureen O’Hara
The Quiet Man, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U. Also available in HD
Screen queen O’Hara stars alongside John Wayne in this Oscar-winning comedy drama directed by John Ford. Wayne plays an Irish-born American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle to buy his family’s old farm, but things get complicated when he falls in love with a local woman, winningly played by O’Hara.
Richard Harris
Gladiator, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15. Also available in HD
A celebrated Roman general (Russell Crowe) seeks revenge for the death of his family after being forced into slavery in Ridley Scott’s Oscar-guzzling historical epic. Legendary Limerick-born thespian Harris features as Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Gabriel Byrne
End Of Days, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 18. Also available in HD
Despite his angelic name, Byrne is in devilish form as Satan himself in this fantasy horror that also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. When the Lord of Darkness turns up in the Big Apple, his mission is to impregnate an unsuspecting young woman and have his evil offspring destroy the world. It’s up to Arnie to save the day.
Pierce Brosnan
Mamma Mia!, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG. Also available in HD
Breaking box office records on its cinema release in 2008, this fabulous musical about a bride’s attempt to find her biological father should be watched for one reason above all others: Pierce Brosnan singing the hits of ABBA.
Saoirse Ronan
Lady Bird, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15. Also available in HD
Christine McPherson (Ronan) is a high-school student who dreams of swapping her Sacramento Catholic school and stifling home life for sophistication and adventure. Following Christine through her final year of school and her first romance, this acclaimed coming-of-age drama is a fresh exploration of the dynamic between parents and their children who are ready to leave the nest.
Michael Fassbender
Alien: Covenant, available now in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15. Also available in HD
It’s two Fassbenders for the price of one in the most recent instalment of the terrifying Alien film series. The German-born Kerryman reprises his role as mysterious android David from Prometheus and also plays a new, less devious synthetic named Walter, as the crew of a colony ship lands on a remote planet to see if it could be their new home. Are they in for a surprise…
