Watch Robots on Prime Video

Doing the robot has never had a more literal meaning, in this inventive mechanical movie starring Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley

By Charlotte Briggs, Staff Writer

When you have a clone you’re never alone. Except when it falls in love and runs off into the sunset with a fellow sentient sweetheart. At least that what happens to womaniser Charles (Jack Whitehall, Bad Education) and gold digger Elaine (Shailene Woodley, Big Little Lies) with their respective robots in this quirky sci-fi flick.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Our technological tale begins with Robert Sheckley’s 1978 collection of short science-fiction stories The Robot Who Looked Like Me. These were then developed for the screen by Borat writer Anthony Hines and Danish stand-up comedian Casper Christensen.

Bring in the acting chops of Whitehall and Woodley, as well as a stellar supporting cast including Paul Rust (Love), David Grant Wright (Better Call Saul), Paul Jurewicz (A Simple Favour) and comedian Nicholas Rutherford, and you’ve got a well-oiled robotic romcom filled with hardwired high jinks and glitchy gags.

And if that isn’t enough to persuade you to give it a go, check out the trailer below.

So, what’s the s(w)itch? The year is 2032 and lifelike androids have been legalised in human society to work as servants and manual labourers. But of course, there’s always someone that ruins nice things. Meet Charles (Whitehall) and Elaine (Woodley) who both own illegal robot versions of themselves, named C2 and E2 respectively.

Their motivations are simple enough: instead of navigating the complex world of dating themselves, they send their computerized counterparts to do the dirty work for them. Genius! However, what they don’t anticipate is the two doppelgängers falling in love and announcing to their dismayed owners that they’re running away to get married. Serves them right…

Faced with going to prison, Charles and Elaine agree to put their pride and differences aside to hijack the wedding before it’s too late. But deprogramming the pair isn’t as simple as they first thought and chaos ensues, obv.

Will Charles and Elaine be able to stop their clones from stealing their lives? Or will their robots prove to be indestructible? Find out when Robots begins streaming on Friday 7 July in Apps & Games > Prime Video.

Inspired by our protagonists’ droid dating tactics? Us too. Which is why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to create the dating app “LoveBytes” for all the alone animatronics out there. Swipe through our mechanical matches and see if they can steel your heart or short-circuit it!
