This time it’s personal

Katie Taylor’s grip on GOAT status slipped when she lost to Chantelle Cameron earlier this year – so it’s time for a rematch. Read on to find out how you can purchase the fight on DAZN with Virgin Media

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

It seemed set up for a triumph. Katie Taylor, undisputed world lightweight champion, Olympic gold medallist, three times Ireland’s Sports Personality of the Year, was finally fighting in Dublin as a pro. An adoring, sell-out crowd at the 3Arena would be ready to cheer every punch she threw, and to tell their family and friends that they were there when Taylor became a two-weight world champion.

The problem? No one told Chantelle Cameron. Taylor had taken a risk when challenging the super lightweight champ, sure, but she was still the favourite. This was Katie Taylor – arguably the best female boxer ever. In fact, a year earlier she’d beaten another boxer with a claim to that accolade, Amanda Serrano. Surely she was nailed on for a celebratory homecoming.

But it wasn’t to be. Cameron emerged victorious – and now it’s time to do it all over again, back at the 3Arena. It’s live on DAZN with Virgin Media on Saturday 25 November and here’s what you need to know.

How did the first fight pan out?

Cameron (pictured above) landed some solid blows in the early stages, as you’d expect from the bigger and heavier fighter. Taylor fought back impressively, her speed and mobility around the ring helping to balance out the size difference, as well as allowing her to see off an assault from Cameron.

Around the halfway point, the momentum switched to the Englishwoman – and stayed there. Cameron connected with a hard left in the sixth round, and that devastating left hand continued to damage Taylor until the end of the 10th. It was close – one of the three judges scored it a draw – but Cameron was the winner.

Did it lead to unpleasant repercussions and a war of words?

In short, no. Taylor must have been shocked, not having lost a bout since the 2016 Olympics, but she immediately paid tribute to the woman who bested her. “Congratulations to Chantelle and thank you for this opportunity,” she said. “I wasn’t surprised how fast she was. I expected everything that came my way, but I just came up short tonight.”

But within minutes of the fight, she also said “I’m looking forward to the rematch” – leaving fans in no doubt that she considered this unfinished business.

Cameron was equally generous, saying she was unsure what the verdict would be as they waited for the judges’ scores (“I’ve seen results go the other way in the past”) and calling Taylor “a great boxer, pound-for-pound the best”. The Northampton boxer also graciously deflected questions about whether she could now be considered the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.

How’s the build-up to this rematch been?

A little spikier. Taylor has made it clear that she was not on top form when she lost to Cameron. “The preparation has been different and I feel a lot better going into this fight,” she said. “I think everyone can see that I wasn’t myself on the night – I’m just grateful that I have another chance to rectify this. I feel this camp has been different, and mentally and physically I feel a lot better.” The implication being Cameron wouldn’t have won if Taylor was firing on all cylinders, although Taylor didn’t elaborate on why she wasn’t fully prepared for a fight against the undisputed world super lightweight champ.

Even the more diffident Cameron sounds extra fired up this time. “I can see why Katie wants to fight me on her own terms, but that’s wound me up,” she said. “I have to come back to Dublin again, give her a second run at a homecoming. I never had a homecoming.

“I think Katie has got all of the pressure, because we’re going back to Dublin – I wouldn’t want to be in her position. I will go in there with a bit of grip, a bit of beast… I’m going to make sure and do a better job this time. I am going to hurt Katie Taylor.”

Who’s the favourite?

The bookmakers and experts had Taylor as favourite for the first match-up, but Cameron is odds-on this time. Being the underdog is an unfamiliar position for Taylor, but it’s one we’re sure she’ll relish in front of another sell-out Dublin crowd.
