Hockey: Women’s FIH Pro League

Great Britain had an up-and-down run of home games in early June: after defeating India, the USA and China (on penalties), they lost to Australia and the USA, then rallied to beat India again and claim another shoot-out win over China. With just a handful of fixtures left, Hollie Pearne-Webb and her team will be determined to climb as high up the table as possible. Isabelle Petter and Grace Balsdon have been among the goals this season and they’ll need to bag a few more in the remaining games, which will be staged in the Netherlands. They’ll face Germany and Belgium – as will the hosts, who are aiming to defend the title they won in 2023.

Hockey: Men’s FIH Pro League

At the start of June, Great Britain were poised behind the leading pack with games in hand, many of them at the Lee Valley venue in north-east London. There they beat Ireland twice, Spain twice and India but couldn’t overcome a strong Australia team, who inflicted two defeats. All this meant they ended this run of games still able to challenge for the top places.

After a short break, they – like the women’s squad – head to the Netherlands for the season’s climactic fixtures where captain David Ames will demand maximum effort from his team, while their German and Belgian opponents will be equally determined to claim maximum points. It’s going to be tough.

Rugby Union: Women’s Premiership

Bristol finished 12 points behind Saracens in the Premiership table but upset the odds in the semi-final, coming back from 14-0 down to defeat Sarries at their own ground – a first ever away win in a women’s semi. England forward Lark Atkins-Davis was the hero, going over three times. Further tries from Courtney Keight and Reneeqa Bonner meant the Bears ran out 29-21 winners at the StoneX Stadium and made it to their first final.

Now they’re heading to Exeter to face reigning champs Gloucester-Hartpury, who crushed the Chiefs 50-19 in their semi. With the likes of Emma Sing – just the 125 points in this season’s Premiership – and Sarah Beckett in their XV, Gloucester will start as favourites. But Bristol won’t be going down without a fight.

Final: Gloucester-Hartpury v Bristol Bears

Saturday 22 June, 2pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)

Motorsport: MotoGP + Moto E

With three wins in four races, Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia is definitely the form rider at this point in the MotoGP season – but Jorge Martín has managed to fend off his challenge and remain top of the standings, thanks to consistent podium finishes. Now it’s on to Essen in the Netherlands, where Bagnaia will feel very much at home having won the Tourist Trophy in 2022 and 2023.

Although Martín has never won there in MotoGP racing, he did win as a Moto3 rider in 2018 – and the next race is in Germany, where Martín did win last year. We’re expecting a classic ding-dong battle between these two for the rest of the season – although six-time champ Marc Márquez isn’t far behind. Both weekends also host Moto E races: Italy’s Mattia Casadei is top of the table after first- and second-place finishes in his home country in early June.

Motorsport: Rallying + Touring

The British team of Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin haven’t finished outside the top six in any event this season, but they haven’t managed to win one. Ahead of the Poland race, they’re still third in their respective tables. Belgium’s Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe lead the way, with the Estonian pair of Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja also ahead of the Brits. As the season reaches the halfway point, Evans and Martin will know they need some big scores if they’re going to mount a serious challenge for the 2024 title.

In Supercars, Broc Feeney lost ground on Will Brown after finishing fifth and seventh in the two Perth races last month, while his Triple Eight team-mate Brown was second and third. There’s still plenty of points to play for, and Chaz Mostert – who had a successful weekend in Perth – is coming up behind the leaders fast.

Motorsport: Formula E

Germany’s Pascal Wehrlein took an early lead in the Formula E championship but hasn’t had the consistency to hold it, and New Zealand’s Nick Cassidy has leapfrogged him after taking second place in Monaco, first and second in the two Berlin races, and third and fourth in Shanghai. There are just a handful of points between them as they head for 2024’s penultimate race weekend in Portland, Oregon – and Cassidy’s compatriot Mitch Evans and Britain’s Oliver Rowland aren’t far behind either. The culmination of this exciting season comes in London at the end of July, live on TNT Sports.

Football: NWSL

This summer, for the first time, TNT Sports is providing live coverage of the US National Women’s Soccer League, which most fans will tell you competes with England’s WSL for the title of best women’s football league quality-wise. Gotham FC, based at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, feature three times this month and their former Spurs coach Juan Carlos Amorós will be looking to pick up maximum points against bottom-half San Diego and Seattle, although Washington Spirit and their dangerous French striker Ouleymata Sarr will offer a tougher test.

Ex-Man Utd coach and 130-cap England international Casey Stoney has led San Diego to two semi-finals and the 2024 Challenge Cup, but the Wave are struggling to find consistency in the NWSL this season. You can see them twice on TNT Sports this month as they battle to reach a play-off place. The most successful English coach currently is former Middlesbrough defender Seb Hines, who’s taken Orlando Pride to the upper echelons of the league.

MMA: UFC

UFC 303 was supposed to see the return of superstar Conor McGregor, but injury put paid to his bout with Michael Chandler. Instead, the headline fight is for the light heavyweight championship, as holder Alex Pereira takes on former champ Jiří Procházka in Las Vegas. Two-weight champ Pereira is on his way to becoming an all-time UFC legend, and a success for the Brazilian in a tough match against his Czech opponent will do his legacy no harm at all.

The first of two Fight Nights this month marks the first time the UFC has staged an event in Saudi Arabia, as former champ Robert Whittaker takes on Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight eliminator at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena. Whittaker hasn’t had a great time since he lost the title, with various cancelled fights and unexpected losses, but after a win over Paulo Costa by unanimous decision at UFC 298 the Aussie will be aiming for another shot at the championship. Then it’s back to the US with action from Denver, Colorado, where the scheduled headline bout is an all-American flyweight clash between Maycee Barber and former strawweight champ Rose Namajunas.

Boxing

Pierce O’Leary comes to the SSE Arena in Belfast unbeaten, to take on Darragh Foley in a super lightweight headline bout. Foley – representing Ireland, born in England, resident of Australia – is a tough southpaw who’ll give the 24-year-old Dubliner a real test. The crowd may be more up for the co-headline fight, though, as local boy Conor Quinn faces England’s Conner Kelsall for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title. The two have similar pro records but Quinn will have almost 10,000 cheering fans in his corner.

Cricket: Women’s Internationals

Overall, India’s women have a winning record against South Africa in all forms of cricket – but last time the Proteas toured India, they came out on top in both ODI and T20 series, as Lizelle Lee pummelled the Indian attack and ended the ODI series with an average of 144.

Ahead of this tour, India are ranked third in T20 internationals and South Africa are fifth, while – neatly – those positions are reversed in ODIs. There’s also a one-off Test in Chennai, giving these talented teams an all-round challenge in what’s sure to be a closely fought and fascinating sequence of matches live on TNT Sports.

Basketball: WNBA

New York Liberty have been through peaks and troughs in their 28-year history, but they’ve never been closer to a WNBA championship than they were last year, when they were pipped in the finals by Las Vegas. The Aces, led by season MVP A’ja Wilson, proved too strong for the Liberty over a best-of-five series. But the New Yorkers have roared back this season, recording a string of home and away victories with Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart in sparkling form (the Aces have had a more sluggish start). LA Sparks and Atlanta Dream both visit the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this month for what should be a pair of exciting games, live on TNT Sports.

Australian Rules Football: AFL Men’s

Sydney Swans hit top spot in the AFL after defeating GWS Giants in Round 8 and they don’t look like letting their lead slip any time soon, with convincing victories over other top-half sides Carlton and Geelong. In fact, even when they had a bye in Round 12, they remained in first. This is despite lacking a prolific goal kicker. Instead, they’ve shared the points around, with Joel Amartey, Chad Warner, Tom Papley and Will Hayward all contributing more than 20. Can anyone catch them? You can see them in action against the Giants (again) and Fremantle, who are both among the pack trying to reel them in, on TNT Sports this month.

The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are battling for supremacy in the American League East and you can see these two contenders go head to head at Yankee Stadium this month, live on TNT Sports. Other contenders you can catch live are the AL Central’s Cleveland Guardians, who host the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Atlanta Braves, who are going well in the NL East behind the Philadelphia Phillies (who surprisingly lost one of their London Series games against the Mets last month). Badminton: BWF World Tour

Badminton’s US Open was suspended for three years during the Covid pandemic, and when it returned in 2023 it was China’s Li Shi Feng and Supanida Katethong of Thailand who took the singles titles. Neither is confirmed to be defending them in this Super 300 tournament, perhaps opening the door to American talent like Beiwen Zhang, who’s currently ranked in the world’s top 10 women.

The subsequent Canadian Open is a Super 500 event with greater prize money: former world No.1 Akane Yamaguchi won the women’s singles title last year, while India’s Lakshya Sen triumphed in the men’s. Tuner in for action from the final stages of these tournaments.

Squash

Bellevue, near Seattle, is the venue for the PSA World Tour Finals this year, with the top eight men’s and women’s singles players invited to face off for a share of the $200,000 prize and the most prestigious title in squash. England’s Mohamed ElShorbagy and Georgina Kennedy will be appearing, although since neither is in the top four they’ll face tough quarter-final draws. Last year’s winners were both from Egypt, and Mostafa Asal and Nouran Gour will be back to try to retain their crowns; Asal, the bad boy of squash nicknamed “Raging Bull”, will be going for his fourth consecutive title.
