What is Sex Education about?

Sex Education is a beautifully shot, literally timeless series, which addresses the many twists and turns of adolescence.

Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield, Slaughterhouse Rulez) is the show’s lead – a well-meaning, 16-year-old virgin – whose parents are sexual therapists. But when Otis manages to successfully assist the school bully with a performance anxiety issue, he soon gets convinced to set up a sex therapy service at school, with a little help from bad girl Maeve (Emma Mackey).

Where is Sex Education filmed?

One of the most wonderful things about Sex Education – aside from the fact it doesn’t shy away from awkward topics and proudly supports the LGBTQ community – is that it doesn’t live in any particular place or time. The characters have smartphones and laptops, yet all the cars in the show appear to be from the 1980s and 1990s. And they all have British accents, but their school is a pseudo-American, John Hughes-esque high school, replete with oversized sports jerseys and swim meets. Plus, it’s almost always sunny.

Sex Education is filmed in a few different locations in Wales (which isn’t always sunny). The main characters’ school, Moordale High, is the Caerleon Campus, formerly part of the University of South Wales in Newport. While the Milburns’ rose-panelled, Scandinavian house is perched on the banks of the River Wye.

Llandogo and the borders of Gloucestershire also feature in the show for various smaller scenes. And for those that remember the walk home from the all-night party at Aimee’s, that was shot over the Wireworks Bridge in Tintern.

Who is in the cast of Sex Education?

Otis is played by Asa Butterfield, and his mum, Dr Jean Milburn, is played by The Crown’s Gillian Anderson. The marvellous supporting cast includes Eric (Ncuti Gatwa, Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans), Otis’ best friend, the aforementioned Maeve (Mackey) and the school’s hapless headmaster (Alistair Petrie, The Terror).

How many seasons of Sex Education have there been?

So far there have been two seasons of Sex Education, but Netflix is already close to wrapping on season three. Although originally intended to be out now, pandemic restrictions caused significant delays.
