Welcome to the Long Story Short on StartUp season 2, the gritty, fast-paced drama that’s part Mr. Robot, part Breaking Bad. Whether you have ten seconds or a few minutes, we’ll turn you into an instant expert...
StartUp, Monday 26 November, 10pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 999)
Got seconds to spare?
A banker who needs to conceal stolen money. A gang lord interested in expanding his business. A hacker with a bright idea. Throw them all together, and the Miami heat is about to get a whole lot hotter…
When word spreads about the revolutionary technology GenCoin, an FBI agent who’s strayed on to the wrong side of the law gets involved – and he’s definitely one investor the emerging entrepreneurs don’t want.
Have a minute more?
So, what on Earth is GenCoin?
Season 1 introduced GenCoin’s founder, Izzy Morales (Otmara Marrero), who spent seven years perfecting a digital currency algorithm that “predicts, adjusts and adapts to market and political shifts in order to remain stable”. In that sense, it one-ups Bitcoin. “Bitcoin is a cute idea,” as Izzy put it, “but it is susceptible to third-party interference and ultimately corruption.”
GenCoin also makes secure and anonymous payments available to “unbanked” people (those who can’t have bank accounts), so long as they have a mobile phone. The big banks aren’t going to like that very much…
Is GenCoin performing well in season 2?
Not exactly. It’s basically owned by the Russian mob now, so there’s that minor glitch, but Izzy and her cohorts Ronald (Edi Gathegi) and Nick (Adam Brody) have a plan. Their new project is called ArakNet, and it’s backed by multimillionaire Wes Chandler (Ron Perlman).
How is Martin Freeman sounding?
American! Even after Fargo and his Marvel movie cameos, it still came as a bit of a shock in season 1 when we realised the beloved Brit had adopted a Stateside twang for his role as FBI agent Phil Rask. Nevertheless, the Yanks can’t have him – he’s ours!
Is there going to be a third season?
You bet there is! So, what are you waiting for?
Can’t get enough?
Here’s how StartUp’s brilliant cast got their careers up and running…
