Based on John Preston’s book of the same name, this utterly unmissable three-part series sees Hugh Grant play Jeremy Thorpe, the charismatic leader of the Liberal party who suffered a spectacular fall from grace while scaling the heights of British politics in the 1970s.
At a time when homosexuality has only recently been decriminalised, Thorpe’s world starts to come apart at the exquisitely tailored seams when his ex-lover, model Norman Scott (Paddington’s Ben Whishaw), threatens to reveal their relationship to the press.
Fearful that his dazzling political career and cosy home life could be upended, Thorpe (who at the time was the youngest leader of a British political party in 100 years) concocts a plan that he hopes will put Scott out of the picture once and for all. But this is only the start of a series of events that will eventually shock the public and expose the British establishment’s corrupt core.
