As Kathy Bates takes her final case, we look at legal drama Matlock on Sky Witness and the star’s prolific career
By Charlotte Briggs, Feature Writer
The jury’s in and the verdict is unanimous: this is not your mother’s Matlock. A reimagining of the 1980s series of the same name, this modern revamp is a fresh, funny and vivacious take on the classic legal drama and there isn’t a stuffy script in sight.
Developed by Jane The Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman, Matlock centres around Madeline Kingston (Academy Award winner Kathy Bates), a wealthy, retired lawyer in her 70s who’s seeking justice for her daughter’s death from an opioid overdose. How? By suiting up and serving justice in style at a prestigious New York City law firm, which Madeline believes hid evidence that could have saved her daughter’s life.
Posing as a widow and operating under the alias Madeline “Matty” Matlock (inspired by her daughter’s love for Andy Griffith’s fictional character), Madeline goes undercover and uses her unassuming demeanour, wily tactics and hard-earned wisdom to win cases while gathering proof about the law firm’s involvement in her daughter’s demise.
Of course, Madeline soon gains the attention of her peers including aspiring senior partner Olympia (Skye P Marshall, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina) as well as Olympia’s ex-husband and firm head honcho Julian (Jason Ritter, Accused).
And working alongside ambitious fellow associates Billy (David Del Rio, Maggie) and Sarah (Leah Lewis, Elemental), Madeline’s got a thirst for justice that needs to be quenched. But how far can she go before someone discovers her secret?
