Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are back together in an Absolutely Fabulous star-studded documentary on GOLD

By Charlotte Briggs, Feature Writer

Sweetie, we have some absolutely fabulous news. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are reuniting for the first time in nearly a decade to celebrate all things Ab Fab. Hurray!

Saunders and Lumley hit screens back in 1992 as Edwina “Eddie” Monsoon and Patsy Stone respectively, an ageing pair of chaotic, Champagne-guzzling party animals living it up in the glamorous world of fashion PR in the 1990s. The disreputable duo were often found committing all sorts of debauchery and their misadventures became as iconic as Patsy’s sky-high hairdo.

Now, more than three decades after the first series aired, GOLD has brough the actors together along with their co-stars Julia Sawalha (Saffron “Saffy” Monsoon) and Jane Horrocks (Bubble) to share their musings from their time on the multi-BAFTA-winning series. Check out the trailer below.

Joining the original cast are a slew of star-studded superfans and Ab Fab contributors including Ruby Wax, Tom Hollander, Emma Bunton, Meera Syal, Emerald Fennell and Richard Curtis. And if you thought that you knew everything about one of the UK’s favourite TV comedies, then you’re wrong. Because as an extra treat for fans, series creator Saunders is opening her personal Ab Fab archives to reveal the inspiration behind timeless comic creations Eddie and Patsy, as well as sharing her handwritten notes and backstage secrets.

Don’t miss Absolutely Fabulous: Inside Out at 9pm on Thursday 17 October on GOLD HD (CH 124) or catch up in On Demand > GOLD or in Apps > U.

The impact that Absolutely Fabulous had on British television is remarkable. While Saunders had already earned her comedy stripes in the popular sketch show French And Saunders, it was Absolutely Fabulous that brought her international acclaim. Inspired by the French And Saunders sketch “Modern Mother and Daughter”, Ab Fab was bold and brash with refreshingly larger-than-life characters who reeled off cutting comebacks and inventive insults while dressed up to the nines.

So successful was Ab Fab that it also attracted a roster of celebrity guest stars, from Debbie Harry and Whoopi Goldberg to Helena Bonham Carter and Idris Elba. And to cement its status as one of the nation’s comedy greats, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite moments from across the Absolutely Fabulous universe. Grab the Bolly and get ready to laugh – we’ll never look at mosquitos the same way again.

Episode:
Season 1, Episode 2, “Fat”

What happens? When Eddie’s skinny arch nemesis Penny comes to visit, Eddie starts a manic “get fit” fad involving diet pills, surgery and even exercise!

Why we love it: From Patsy’s now viral razor-sharp exchange “She’s fat… she’s dead… she’s blind!” to Eddie’s unhinged rant at Penny, the script gave viewers their first taste of the powerful combined comedy chops of Saunders and Lumley.

Episode:
Series 2, Episode 2, “Death”

What happens? After Eddie’s father passes away, she avoids processing his death by investing in lavish artworks and anything else she can get her hands on.

Why we love it: For the many laughs that Patsy and Eddie gave us with their anarchic antics, it was sobering to see Eddie tackle the very real and relatable experiences of grief. Plus, who can forget a drunken Patsy and Eddie staggering into grave sites during the funeral.

Episode:
Season 2, Episode 6, “Birth”

What happens? When a fire breaks out in the Monsoon household, Saffy and Eddie comically evacuate the premises while trying to uncover its mysterious cause.

Why we love it: If there was ever an apocalypse you can guarantee that Patsy and Eddie would emerge unscathed while clutching bottles of vodka, and a soot-covered Patsy waking up to the kitchen she burned down will never fail to make us giggle.

Episode:
Season 3, Episode 1, “Door Handle”

What happens? When Patsy receives a doctor’s letter summoning her for a routine smear and breast screening, she seeks advice from the most unlikely of places.

Why we love it: Seeing sworn enemies Saffy and Patsy call a momentary truce as Saffy explains how female anatomy works while Patsy mistakes a bottle cap for a lump... need we say more?

Episode:
Season 3, Episode 4, “Jealous”

What happens? With Eddie hellbent on revenge for getting snubbed at her PR awards ceremony, Saffy is pursued by her slimy professor who’s secretly married. Yikes!

Why we love it: It’s one of the rare (yet touching) moments that Eddie comes to her daughter’s defence in the name of girl power, and let’s just say Saunders packs a punch. Plus, legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell guest stars in this episode. Swoon!

Episode:
Season 5, Episode 3, “Panickin’”

What happens? Patsy’s overeagerness to please Minnie Driver, her first proper celebrity styling client, leads her to pursuing Eddie into a panic room where they get locked in. Chaos ensues, obv.

Why we love it: Patsy’s botched lips? Check. The “supplies” of fresh food and champers? Check. A meltdown from our leading ladies? Double check. This scene is made of all the comedic chaos that Eddie and Patsy are known for and we love watching it every time.
