Keeping up with Rosie Jones

BAFTA-winning comedian Rosie Jones hosts another evening of mischief and mayhem to celebrate the diversity in British comedy

By Virgin TV Edit

Is there anything that Rosie Jones can’t do? Fresh from a sell-out UK tour, filming game show juggernaut Taskmaster (series 18 coming this autumn) and TV appearances on, well, everything else, it’s safe to say that Jones has cemented her place as a household name in comedy.

Now Jones, who has ataxic cerebral palsy, is curating her third comedy showcase that celebrates diverse comedic talent from across the spectrum of disabilities. Rosie Jones’s Disability Comedy Extravaganza will welcome Jones and seven other fantastic comics to the stage, including familiar faces Jonny Pelham, Lara Ricote (pictured below) and Tim Renkow as well as up-and-coming talent David Eagle, Dean T Beirne, Eryn Tett and Emman Idama.

When asked what she hopes the series does for aspiring disabled comedians, Jones said: “I hope they can watch it and think ‘if they can do it, I can do it’. When I grew up there were no disabled comedians on the TV so to be able to showcase so many brilliant disabled comedians is a joy, so I just hope that it encourages a new class of brilliant comics. Being disabled shouldn’t ever stop you from doing what you want to do.”

And with Jones having already shared her showcase stage with comics such as Jo Cocey (Waterloo Road), Eshaan Akbar (Sex Education) and stand-up force of nature Jake Lambert, we have no doubt that this next generation of talent will leave you laughing out loud.

Don’t miss the third series of Rosie Jones’s Disability Comedy Extravaganza at 10pm on Thursday 22nd August on U&Dave HD (CH 127). In the meantime, read on to find out how Jones came to be one of the most famous faces in British comedy and where you can watch her on Virgin TV now.

Writing

Before Jones was making us laugh on screens, she wrote for comedy giants such as 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Would I Lie To You? and The Last Leg. In 2020 Jones was also part of the writing staff for outrageous Netflix comedy Sex Education.

But Jones doesn’t just have writing credentials for onscreen comedy projects. She penned children’s book series The Amazing Edie Eckhart and their sequels The Amazing Edie Eckhart: The Big Trip and The Amazing Edie Eckhart: The Friend Mission, which have been endorsed by the likes of Jacqueline Wilson.

TV Comedy

Back in 2017 Jones made her TV debut on 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Apps > Channel 4). Since then, the star has made even more hilarious appearances over the years on shows such as...

  • Hypothetical (Apps > U)
  • Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back (Apps > Channel 4)
  • Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled (Apps > U)
  • The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year 2023 (Apps > Channel 4)
  • Mel Giedroyc: Unforgiveable (Apps > U)
  • QI (Apps > BBC iPlayer)

And as well as presenting Rosie Jones’s Disability Comedy Extravaganza (watch the first two series in Apps > U), Jones has written, created and starred in comedy short Disability Benefits (Apps > Channel 4) and in Rosie Tries To Help, an online Comedy Central series where she made it her mission to make the world a better place. Aw!

This year Jones hosted Out Of Order (On Demand > Comedy Central), a new panel game in which teams attempt to put members of the public in the correct order in various wacky categories. Alongside team captains Katherine Ryan and Judi Love, she proved an entertainingly anarchic host with absolutely no interest in keeping things orderly.

Factual Programmes

As well as appearing on the BBC’s Question Time twice, Jones fronted the BAFTA-nominated series Trip Hazard (Apps > Channel 4), in which she visited various UK tourist destinations with other celebrities and comedians in tow – including Tom Allen, Jamali Maddix and Faye Ripley – and tried to stay on her feet while having fun.

In 2023, Jones brought her groundbreaking documentary Rosie Jones: Am I A R*tard? (Apps > Channel 4) to audiences and raised awareness about ableism and online hate speech against disabled people.

Acting

Jones has also shown off her acting chops across a variety of roles, appearing in popular shows such as...

  • Silent Witness (Apps > BBC iPlayer)
  • Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators (Apps > BBC iPlayer)
  • Sumotherhood (Sky Cinema on demand)
  • Call The Midwife (Apps > BBC iPlayer)
  • Horrible Histories (Apps > BBC iPlayer)

And with her scheduled upcoming appearance as a contestant on the next series of Taskmaster later this year, we can’t wait to see what else the future has in store for Rosie Jones!
