Read on to discover some of the ultra HD picks on Virgin TV this November.

The Patriot

Saturday 2 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

Mel Gibson is in his leading-man pomp as farmer Benjamin Martin, a peaceful man who is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a sadistic British officer murders his son. It also features a terrific supporting cast including Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Joely Richardson (101 Dalmatians) and Jason Isaacs (Black Hawk Down). The Patriot wasn’t a huge box office but it’s one of those repeatable films that has found a new life on the small screen and is perfect for the full home UHD experience.

The Fisher King

Sunday 3 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) is Jack, a nihilistic shock-jock who quits his job after his callous advice to a caller leads to tragedy. Years later, drunk and suicidal, he’s saved from a beating by a homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams, Good Will Hunting) – a man whose life, it turns out, Jack was responsible for shattering. He resolves to help Parry get back on his feet, but that might involve finding the literal Holy Grail… This is one of the strangest films to come out of mainstream Hollywood, but that’s what happens when you put Monty Python man Terry Gilliam in charge of your movie.

Pollock

Saturday 9 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

Ed Harris is a character actor par excellence in the likes of The Truman Show, The Rock, Gone Baby Gone and Top Gun: Maverick, but he took the lead in this biopic of the abstract painter Jackson Pollock, as well as directing duties. It’s an eye-opening glimpse into the artist’s life, never shying away from his mental health issues and alcoholism, as well as detailing his relationship with fellow artist Lee Krasner (Marcia Gay Harden, who won an Oscar in the role). But the most fascinating scenes are of Pollock painting with his inimitable drip technique, where ultra HD makes the colour more vibrant and the artwork even more arresting.

The Shallows

Sunday 10 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

A surfing trip goes badly wrong for Nancy (Blake Lively, A Simple Favour) when she is stranded on an isolated rock and left at the mercy of a wounded and seemingly enraged great white shark. In a tense, nerve-jangling stand-off, she must rely on her ingenuity to survive in the face of terrifying nature. If you can stand seeing those rows of razor-sharp teeth up close in ultra HD, you’ll love this white-knuckle ride of a thriller.

Deliver Us from Evil

Saturday 16 November May, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana, The Dry) is a New York cop called to investigate some seemingly inexplicable cases, from a woman who throws her baby into a lion enclosure to lightbulbs that refuse to stay lit. A priest (Édgar Ramírez, Zero Dark Thirty) tells him he thinks demons are involved, and Sarchie is sceptical – until the evidence starts to persuade him. Cop and priest are drawn into an increasingly bizarre and deadly hunt as an unnatural evil worms its way into their lives. A tense, creepy and effective chiller that’ll make you want to sleep with the lights on. If they’ll stay on…

Moneyball

Sunday 17 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

When Oakland Athletics manager Billy Beane and his number-crunching assistant Peter Brand started using data to recruit baseball players, they started a quiet revolution that eventually spilt out into the wider world of sport and changed practices that had been unquestioned for decades. Scriptwriters Aaron Sorkin (The West WingThe Social Network) and Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s ListRipley) turn this story into a surprisingly gripping movie about sticking to your principles, beating the odds and, well, going from rags to riches (in sporting terms). Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill put in career-best performances in the leads, and the electrifying baseball scenes in particular are enhanced by being in ultra HD.

Wild Things

Saturday 23 November, 10pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

This deliciously twisty thriller stars Scream’s Neve Campbell and Denise Richards as teenage students who accuse their guidance counsellor (Matt Dillon) of sexual assault. The ensuing trial goes in an unexpected direction – and so does the plot, as lies are stacked upon lies, double-crosses are crossed and uncrossed, and a detective (Kevin Bacon) tries to untangle it all. Schlocky, steamy and at least twice as silly as it sounds, this is enormous fun, all set against a dazzling backdrop of Floridian wealth and sunshine that positively glitters in ultra HD.

Cold Pursuit

Sunday 24 November, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)

Liam Neeson’s reinvention as a grizzled action hero has been a magnificent thing to behold, and among the likes of the Taken trilogy, Non-Stop and The Commuter there’s also this energetic thriller, a remake of a Norwegian film. Nels Coxon (Neeson) is a snowplough driver and model citizen whose son dies after falling in with a drug cartel. Nels grabs a sawn-off shotgun and wreaks revenge, kicking off a chain reaction of increasingly violent attacks with an escalating body count. Sit back and enjoy both the dazzling mountain scenery and the bloody action playing out on screen.
