Here’s what is on offer on the Virgin Media Store in January.

Wicked

Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert PG

Doubts about whether the hit fantasy musical could be transformed into a successful film were smashed when Wicked opened to glowing reviews and huge box-office success, even snagging a Golden Globe award. It’s the story of the friendship between witches Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), who help each other through difficult times – until an encounter with the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) sends them off in different directions. Can they find their way back to each other? With memorable songs, eye-popping design and movie-star performances of the highest calibre, this already has the feel of a modern classic. And it’s only part one…

Gladiator II

Buy now or rent from Tuesday 28 January. Cert 15

Celebrated British director Ridley Scott returned to make this sequel 24 years on from the original Gladiator with the spectacle level set to MAX. It may not have Russell Crowe glowering at the Emperor, but it does have Paul Mescal (Normal People) donning the leather and stepping into the arena, fighting all manner of vicious creatures as he searches for revenge and redemption. It’s an ambitious epic from Scott, beautifully shot in some incredible locations, co-starring Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen (reprising her role from the first film) and Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn.

Conclave

Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert 12

Nominated for numerous awards already and expected to feature prominently at this year’s Oscars, this new drama from Edward Berger (All Quiet On The Western Front) takes place amid the election of a new pope. Ralph Fiennes (The Menu) is the cardinal in charge of the papal conclave, and as he examines the credentials of all the candidates, some disturbing secrets surface. Will the Church emerge from this process intact? Berger, writer Peter Straughan (Wolf Hall) and a tremendous cast tease out the intrigue and suspense over two gripping hours.

Dune: Prophecy

Buy season 1 now. Cert 18

The Dune movies have been the most awe-inspiring cinematic experiences of recent years, and this six-part prequel series brings that spectacle to the small screen. It tells the story of the rise of the Bene Gesserit, the mysterious sisterhood that wields enormous power in the Dune universe (Duneiverse?). Emily Watson (War Horse) and Olivia Williams (The Father) play the ambitious siblings asserting their grip on authority, while Vikings’ Travis Fimmel is the warrior trying to impede their influence on the Padishah Emperor (Mark Strong, The Critic). Thoughtful fantasy on an epic scale.

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim

Buy now or rent from Tuesday 28 January. Cert 12

Return to Middle-earth for a new chapter in the JRR Tolkien saga, this one an animated action film set almost two centuries before the events of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. During the rule of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Succession’s Brian Cox), Rohan comes under attack from the Dunlending tribe of mountain warriors, and the kingdom is in serious peril. It falls to Helm’s daughter Héra (Gaia Wise) to step up and face the threat. Stylishly animated with spectacular battle scenes, it’s narrated by Miranda Otto in character as Éowyn of Rohan.

Anora

Buy from Monday 20 January or rent from Monday 3 February. Cert 18

Writer/director Sean Baker’s movies, like Tangerine and The Florida Project, have been hailed for their focus on society’s most marginalised people – and Anora is his most acclaimed to date, having won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Anora (Mikey Madison, 2022’s Scream) is a sex worker in Brooklyn who’s persuaded to marry a wealthy client. Sounds like a good move… until her husband’s family find out and vow to intimidate her into an annulment, whatever it takes. A wild and unpredictable ride, it’s also oddly romantic, with a star-making performance from Madison.

A Different Man

Buy or rent now. Cert 15

After his impressive performance as young Donald Trump in The Apprentice, Sebastian Stan takes a further step away from his superhero antics as Marvel’s Winter Soldier with this blackly comic drama. Stan is Edward, an aspiring actor with a facial disfigurement, who undergoes a life-changing medical procedure and becomes a successful property dealer. When he’s tempted back to the theatre, he begins a relationship with playwright Ingrid (Renate Reinsve, The Worst Person In The World) but is disturbed by her attraction to Oswald (played by British actor, presenter and campaigner Adam Pearson). Unsettling and occasionally shocking, it’s a unique and provocative film.

Sing Sing

Buy or rent now. Cert 15

The story of the real-life Rehabilitation Through The Arts programme at New York’s maximum-security Sing Sing prison, this unusual film stars many of the real convicts alongside Oscar-nominated actors Colman Domingo (Rust) and Paul Raci (Sound Of Metal). Divine G (Domingo), imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose in the facility’s theatre group, and encourages Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin, playing himself in his first movie role) to take part too. Although it’s cathartic for both, the oppressive environment means tensions rise, especially when tragedy strikes. Emotional and uplifting stuff.
