Sport pick of the week
Rugby League – Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves
Saturday 1 March, 8.30pm, Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) + Sky Sports Action/HD (CH 517/507)
The shiny, $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas may not be where you’d expect to see a rugby league match. But Australia’s NRL kicked off its 2024 season here, and in 2025 the Super League is getting in on the Vegas action. Reigning champs Wigan take to the field on Saturday to face Warrington in a mouthwatering match-up as the sport looks to expand its appeal around the world.
After their unprecedented 1-0 golden point defeat to Leigh in the season opener, the Warriors got their title defence going with a convincing 46-4 win at Hull FC, halfback Jai Field going over three times. Warrington won their two opening fixtures, seeing off Huddersfield and Catalans with Toby King and Aussie star Matt Dufty scoring tries in both matches. This promises to be a close game.
It’s a huge night of rugby league in Vegas. This match is followed by NRL clashes between the Canberra Raiders and New Zealand Warriors (12am), and then the champions Penrith Panthers against Cronulla Sharks (4.30am). In between those, there’s the chance to see England’s women take on Australia (2am). Put a pot of coffee on and prepare to be entertained.
