With new managers, new players and new-look teams, it’s that time of year where fans believe anything can happen. So what are we expecting from the Premier League this season? We’ve got some predictions…

Arsenal will win it, finally

Arsenal have improved every season under Mikel Arteta. They’ve finished second for the past two seasons. And the only way is up. The Gunners have strengthened at the back by signing Riccardo Calafiori (and will soon welcome back Jurriën Timber from injury), they’re looking to add quality in midfield, and their much-hyped lack of a prolific striker didn’t stop them chalking up their record Premier League goal tally last season. They’re ready.

Man City will come… third

Pep Guardiola’s strategy of peaking in the final third of the season has been working, but it’s still risky. It only takes an injury to a key player like Erling Haaland or Rodri for the wheels to come off. Add persistent fitness issues for 33-year-old Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish’s lack of form and the departure of significant contributors like Julián Álvarez (and possibly more), and City just don’t look as majestic as in recent seasons. We’re backing not only Arsenal but a rejuvenated Liverpool under Arne Slot to finish above them.

Erik ten Hag will lose his job before Christmas

Man Utd’s Erik ten Hag is arguably a very unlucky manager. He had horrendous injury problems last season, especially in defence, and his tenure has coincided with behind-the-scenes turmoil at the club – which we’re not convinced the arrival of Jim Ratcliffe has solved. But it was Ten Hag who fell out with Jadon Sancho, who persisted with bizarre tactics that left a huge hole in midfield, who insisted all was well on the field when fans could plainly see the opposite was true. It won’t take much to open the trapdoor.

Niclas Füllkrug will become an instant cult hero

German striker Niclas Füllkrug is a proper late bloomer. As recently as 2022 he was playing in the second division with Werder Bremen. But he made his Germany debut that same year, aged 29, and has proved highly effective for both the national team and 2024 Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund. And now the burly, 6ft 2in striker will grace the Premier League, after West Ham snapped him up for £27 million. He’s the kind of honest, never-say-die pro who will be loved by fans whether he scores 20 goals or two.

Everton’s woes will continue

Amid off-pitch chaos, Sean Dyche steered Everton to safety in April with games to spare – ignore the points deduction and they’d have finished level with Brighton. But with huge financial issues and no takeover realistically in sight, Everton have sold influential midfielder Amadou Onana (with more likely to leave) and their signings so far aren’t inspiring confidence. This is meant to be the club’s final season at Goodison Park before they move to a new stadium. We hope for the fans’ sake that it doesn’t end in despair.

Ipswich will finish in the top half

Last season all the promoted clubs were relegated, but that’s not the norm. Sheffield United finished in the top half in 2019/20, as did Leeds the following year. And Ipswich, following two successive promotions under forward-thinking manager Kieran McKenna, look ready to follow that route. They play fast-paced, attractive football, they’ve made some smart signings including securing former on-loan attacker Omari Hutchinson, and they’ve got the kind of team spirit that screams success. Do not underestimate them.

Alexander Isak will be top scorer

Yeah yeah, Erling Haaland’s smashed 63 goals in his two Prem seasons. But when City struggled last autumn, he suffered a dip too – he’s not the sort of player who can produce crucial goals from nowhere to turn a team’s fortunes around. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak is exactly that player: skilful, creative, willing to drop deep to find possession, and just as lethal in front of goal. Even if he moves (rumours have linked him with Arsenal), we’re confident the Swede can better his total of 21 last term.

Chelsea will go backwards

After a turbulent first half of the 2023/24 season, Chelsea improved significantly and after a run of just one defeat in 15, they finished in the top six. The club’s response? They sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino. As the new season dawns, they have a new coach, a clutch of new signings, and a real sense that they’re starting all over again. Pep Guardiola’s former assistant Enzo Maresca has never managed in the Premier League before and we’re not sure being bald, bearded and stylishly dressed is enough. With European football adding extra demands, the Blues will surely slip back down the table.

Oliver Glasner and Fabian Hürzeler will be the hipsters’ favourites

Germany is the place to recruit coaches these days. Former Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner took over from Roy Hodgson mid-season and soon had Crystal Palace purring as they achieved their highest ever Premier League finish and points total. New Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler, the first permanent Prem manager born in the 1990s, has even cooler credentials after he led cult Hamburg club St Pauli to promotion. The football hipsters will be drooling over this pair, with their square jaws and rollneck sweaters. Even if Gary O’Neil’s Wolves outperform them both.

Fulham will do absolutely nothing memorable whatsoever

Remember last season? Of course you do, it was only last season. Remember Fulham? Weeeellll… there was that weird week in December where they won successive games 5-0. But they never won more than two in a row, and they never lost more than three in a row. Under Scott Parker, they just sort of chug along, not doing anything unexpected. Never lower than 15th, never higher than 10th. They’re so unmemorable, in fact, you probably didn’t even notice that we wrongly said Scott Parker was their manager. It’s been Marco Silva since 2021.
