Wembley showdown: Joshua v Dubois

Wembley showdown: Joshua v Dubois

It’s another huge clash for British boxing as heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois face off. Here’s what you need to know to purchase the fight on DAZN with Virgin Media

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

Losing to Oleksandr Usyk for the second time could have marked the end of the road for Anthony Joshua. The temptation to call it quits must have been there. But Joshua refused to back down from the challenge that lay ahead – and this weekend, he gets another shot at a world title as he continues his attempt to become an all-time great of the sport.

Wembley Stadium is sold out for the all-British fight between AJ and IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, but don’t worry if you didn’t get a ticket. You can see every minute of this momentous event live on DAZN with Virgin Media, starting at 3.30pm on Saturday 21 September. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s the background to this fight?

South London fighter Dubois, aka Dynamite or Triple D, came to the IBF title in a slightly circuitous way. In June he won the interim title in a bout against Croatia's Filip Hrgović – and then, when Usyk vacated the title a few weeks later, it landed in Dubois’ lap by default. But that’s not to suggest he’s not a worthy champion. His impressive career features 21 wins in 23 fights, and he’s had his own shots at world titles. Like Joshua, he stepped into the ring with Usyk at the height of the Ukrainian’s powers, and gave a decent account of himself in defeat – flooring Usyk in the fifth round with a punch that was controversially ruled a low blow.

Joshua has followed a somewhat unorthodox path since that punishing defeat to Usyk in August 2022. After seeing off Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, he was slated to face one of the other big names of heavyweight boxing, Deontay Wilder. They ended up co-headlining an event in Riyadh in December 2023, and many assumed that Joshua v Wilder would follow. The problem? Wilder lost his bout.

With Wilder and Tyson Fury off the table, Joshua made the decision to take on former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou. He was on a hiding to nothing, especially since the Frenchman had knocked down Fury in his previous bout, and risked embarrassment. Instead, he made a real statement by knocking out Ngannou – possessor of “the hardest punch in the world” – in the second round. And now he gets a shot at the IBF world title.

Who’s the favourite?

The bookies overwhelmingly have Joshua as the favourite, and some experienced fighters agree. British heavyweight Fabio Wardley, who’ll be hoping to take on at least one of these two at some point, says, “Where it stands right now, I’m giving it to AJ. He’s got the form, he’s looking really dangerous and spiteful… He’s boxing with intent and seems comfortable in his game plan.” Former world featherweight champ Josh Warrington – who’s fighting on the undercard – agrees, saying Joshua has “an air of confidence” who has “that demon look in his eye”.

But not everyone agrees. Another British heavyweight, Frazer Clarke, says Dubois has gained maturity recently and is a threat to AJ, while Dubois’ former opponent Kevin Larena says he’s “a serious, serious heavyweight… He’s got a lot of power behind his punches. I think Daniel has fought the better opponents in his last three or four fights.”

How do they measure up?

Who’s on the undercard?

It’s British fighters all the way down for the Wembley crowd and the viewers at home. Warrington will be gunning for Belfast fighter Anthony Cacace’s IBF and IBO super featherweight belts, while light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi will follow up his defeat of the hitherto unbeaten Dan Azeez with a fight against Willy Hutchinson.

European middleweight champ Tyler Denny takes on Hamzeh Sheeraz, and there’s a lightweight clash between Mark Chamberlain and Josh Padley. Unfortunately, the middleweight bout between Josh Kelly and Liam Smith has been called off because of illness.
