You have to take the bad with the good, they say – and we’ve got no problem with that if it means another helping of our favourite demon-angel duo. That’s right, a new season of Good Omens is here!

Yes, fussy angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen, Best Interests) and irascible demon Crowley (David Tennant, Litvinenko) are back for more episodes of the offbeat fantasy drama written by Neil Gaiman, based on the book he co-wrote with his fellow bestselling novelist, the late Terry Pratchett.

Having averted Armageddon, the pair have returned to their comfortable London lives, Aziraphale as a bookseller, Crowley as a general demon-about-town and occasional plant collector. But their peaceful existence doesn’t last for long. The archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm, Confess, Fletch) pays an unexpected visit to Aziraphale, stripped of both his clothes and his previously arrogant manner, while Crowley meets with the demon Shax (Miranda Richardson, Churchill).

Both come away from these encounters with the distinct impression that Something Is Up. And in their world, that usually means bad news… You can find out just what it is that’s Up when the new season arrives on Friday 28 July in Apps & Games > Prime Video. But first, a quick catch-up on the previous season. 

The Long Story Short on season 1

Aziraphale and Crowley had been tasked with bringing about the end of the world – but they quite like it there, thank you very much! So they teamed up to prevent Armageddon, crossing their fingers that their bosses above and below wouldn’t notice what they were up to. Some chance.

Their plan was to steer the Antichrist away from both good and evil, making sure he was neither good nor evil but simply neutral, too middle-of-the-road to cause apocalypse-type problems. The only hitch: the Antichrist wasn’t who they thought he was, after a wacky mix-up at a convent.

As the real Antichrist, a young English boy named Adam (Sam Taylor Buck), started to discover his powers, the Four Horsemen began their preparations for the big event. Alongside this we took a wild ride through history, seeing the development of Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship over the years – with a stop-off in the 1650s, where Agnes Nutter (Josie Lawrence) was burned at the stake by the Witchfinder Pulsify (Jack Whitehall, Robots), leaving a mysterious book of prophecies that might just have a significant bearing on Armageddon.  

Back in the present, events came to a head at an airbase near London, as the M25 caught fire. There was a big old flamey battle, and somehow Aziraphale, Crowley and Adam convinced the forces of Heaven and Hell to leave Earth alone, at least for a while.

Right, I remember! Hasn’t this show been away for ages?

Yes, it has. The first season appeared on Prime Video in summer 2019 (and then on BBC Two in early 2020) – more than four years ago! That’s a long time to wait under any circumstances. And let’s be honest, some of those years felt like about five years.

It wasn’t conceived as an ongoing series, but it was a big enough hit to return – after a delay. Still, the hold-up meant that, with Tennant and Sheen unable to film season 2, we did get to see the pair in the inventive Zoom-based series Staged.

Who’s in the second season?

There are a few returning characters, such as Hamm’s Gabriel and Doon Mackichan (Two Doors Down) as the archangel Michael. And several cast members from the first season return in new roles, such as Richardson, who previously played shady medium Madame Tracy in season 1. Nina Sosanya (His Dark Materials) and Maggie Service (Quiz), who played the nuns at fault for the Antichrist switcheroo, are now Nina and Maggie, who run local businesses near Aziraphale’s bookshop. 

Look out for new cast members including Shelley Conn (Bridgerton), Liz Carr (Silent Witness), Donna Preston (Hard Cell) and Quelin Sepulveda (The Man Who Fell To Earth). And Tennant’s keeping it in the family with appearances from his father-in-law Peter Davison (who also preceded him in the role of The Doctor) and son Ty Tennant (Consent).

What can we expect from season 2?

Season 1 stayed faithful to the book, as Gaiman squeezed the entirely sprawling story into six episodes – but we’re in entirely new territory now. Gaiman, joined by co-writer Jonathan Finneman, has been predictably cryptic about the plot: “We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery.”
