The Sky Max comedy drama starring Joe Gilgun and Michelle Keegan is back for a sixth series and it’s just as brilliant as ever

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

Get the police on speed dial and alert the local farmers, because the Brassic gang are back! Sky Max’s comedy drama has been one of the most entertaining things on TV over the past few years – we’ve loved watching Vinnie (Joe Gilgun), Erin (Michelle Keegan), Tommo (Ryan Sampson) and the other ne’er-do-wells get themselves in and out of five series’ worth of scrapes.

And the Royal Television Society agrees, bestowing its Comedy Drama award on the show last year. So we’re delighted that the crew are returning for another series this autumn!

The series 5 finale reached epic levels of manic Brassic energy, when – spoilers, if you haven’t seen it yet – Vinnie and co took revenge on drug dealer Manolito (Rachid Sabitri) by scarpering with his LS Lowry paintings, one step ahead of the police, just as Sugar (Joanna Higson) went into labour. After that, the show’s first Christmas special (“A Very Brassic Christmas”), guest starring Imelda Staunton and Greg Davies, was like a gentle, festive sort of comedown.

But it’s time to strap in again for the typically anarchic new series, starting on Thursday 26 September at 10pm on Sky Max HD (CH 111). Here’s a look at the new episodes…

As the new series begins, it looks as if Vinnie and Erin might have finally overcome the obstacles that were preventing them being together. There’s even some talk about settling down and growing up. What?!? Fortunately, that doesn’t last long.

There’s a nudist cult. There’s a man-eating crocodile named Lola. There’s a marriage between two people who definitely shouldn’t be hearing wedding bells. And all the while, there’s the threat from Davey MacDonagh (Neil Ashton) and his criminal family, who – more than ever before – have got it in for Vinnie and his pals, big time.

A word to the wise: those who are desperate to find out what really happened on that fateful night at the end of series 5 won’t get their answers from episode 1 – but they won’t have to wait too long, because episode 2 takes us back to that cliffhanger, and all episodes will be released at once.

And once you’ve binged the new series of Brassic, there are lots more Sky Originals that you’ll get a big kick out of – all available to be watched in On Demand. Scroll down to find out more.

When is Brassic series 6 on Sky Max?

The new sixth season of Brassic begins on Thursday 26 September at 10pm on Sky Max HD (CH 111). On the same day, all episodes of the new series will be available to watch in On Demand > Sky Max.

Mr Bigstuff

Find it in On Demand > Sky Max

What is it? Carpet salesman Glen (Ryan Sampson) has his mundane suburban life turned upside down when his estranged brother Lee (Danny Dyer) arrives on his doorstep, bringing chaos with him.

Brassic fans will love it because… It was created and written by Sampson, who plays Brassic’s free-spirited Tommo and always brings an off-kilter comedic presence (Plebs, Up The Women!). It explores similar themes too, with characters who are on the edges of society, unsure where they fit in. Plus, you know, Danny Dyer!

Trollied

Find it in On Demand > Sky Comedy

What is it? The staff of a Cheshire supermarket muddle their way through each day, struggling with their lack of competence at work, romance and, well, life.

Brassic fans will love it because… Although its characters are largely on the right side of the law, Trollied’s north-west England, small-town sensibility is similar to Brassic’s, with an unlikely, offbeat romance at its heart between Julie (Jane Horrocks) and Gavin (Jason Watkins).

Rob & Romesh Vs

Find it in On Demand > Sky Max

What is it? Comedians and best buds Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan try their hand at various potentially humiliating tasks, from singing with a K-Pop band to getting in the ring with Anthony Joshua.

Brassic fans will love it because… Like the Brassic gang, they just can’t stop themselves getting into scrapes. Also like the Brassic gang, they win your hearts through the power of their rock-solid friendship. Aww!

Breeders

Find it in On Demand > Sky Comedy

What is it? Martin Freeman (The Responder) and Daisy Haggard (Back To Life) star as a couple trying (and sometimes failing) to raise a family, in a bittersweet comedy based partly on Freeman’s own experiences as a parent.

Brassic
fans will love it because…
It may have a completely different setting, but like Brassic, Breeders is about doing your best to cope with the everyday stresses and strains of life. And it covers themes of mental illness, as Freeman’s Paul comes to terms with his anger issues and their impact on those closest to him.

Upright

Find it in On Demand > Sky Comedy

What is it? Lucky (Tim Minchin), a struggling musician, and Meg (Milly Alcock), a runaway teenager, attempt to transport an upright piano across Australia to Lucky’s mother’s house in Perth.

Brassic fans will love it because… There are shades of Vinnie’s relationship with GP Dr Cox (Dominic West) in the way this intergenerational pair bounce off each other, picking up bits of wisdom in spite of themselves. And immature man-child Lucky would fit in well with Vinnie, Tommo and the rest.

A Town Called Malice

Find it in On Demand > Sky Max

What is it? A down-on-their-luck south London crime family relocate to the Costa del Sol in an attempt to recreate their golden years in this 1980s-set comedy thriller series.

Brassic fans will love it because… It’s the old, old story: a young man born into a life of criminality is desperate to extract himself from it. Just when Gene Lord (Jack Rowan) thought he was out, they pull him back in. And like Erin with Vinnie, his love interest Cindy (Tahirah Sharif) is always ready to help his efforts to leave his dodgy past behind.

Never Mind The Buzzcocks

Find it in On Demand > Sky Max

What is it? The classic comedy pop quiz is now on Sky Max, hosted by Greg Davies with regular panellists Daisy May Cooper, Noel Fielding and Jamali Maddix, plus guests.

Brassic fans will love it because… If you like Brassic-style raucous laughs, they don’t get much more raucous than NMTB – and no one will ever mistake presenter (and Brassic guest star) Davies for the voice of reason. It won’t get any less raucous when new team captain Sophie Willan (from Taskmaster series 17) joins the show.

Smothered

Find it in On Demand > Sky Comedy

What is it? Sammy (Danielle Vitalis) has had enough of dating. When she meets Tom (Jon Ponting), she proposes a fun, no-strings-attached, three-week fling. What could possibly go wrong?

Brassic fans will love it because… Erm, it’s about an eccentric romance? It’s about young people trying to make sense of the world? Let’s be honest, there’s not much cross-over. This is just a really good show that we think you should watch.
