Superb players, glittering prizes, spine-tingling occasions – it’s the season for finals and you’ll find plenty of them on TNT Sports this month, plus much more live action
By Chris Miller, Feature Writer
The biggest club game in football? There’s not much doubt about it. Wembley Stadium is the venue for the UEFA Champions League final between two of Europe’s biggest clubs, and it’s live on TNT Sports. As, indeed, are the other matches offering the winners a European trophy – the Women’s Champions League, the Europa League and the Europa Conference League. Some of the best players on the continent displaying their skills in front of sell-out crowds in electric atmospheres? Sounds like the definition of a don’t-miss to us.
The Premier League trophy is also up for grabs this month, as are the biggest prizes in rugby union, including the men’s and women’s Premiership titles and the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, and you’ll be able to watch them all on TNT Sports. There’s also UFC, the NBA play-offs, MotoGP, rallying, Major League Baseball, Aussie Rules, international hockey and more. With TNT Sports, you’re never short of live sport to enjoy.

Football: Premier League
It’s been an exciting run-in and the battle for the Premier League title is going all the way to the final day, as is the competition for European qualification places. There’s a slightly lesser chance of some excitement at the bottom, where Luton need a miraculous set of results to save them from relegation. But even in matches where there’s little to play for (although every place you can finish further up the table means millions more pounds), the final round is always a wonderful occasion and a real celebration of football, footballers and fans. Tune in to TNT Sports on Sunday 19 May to enjoy action from the final day of the Premier League.
Final Day
Sunday 19 May, 3pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)
Football: UEFA Champions League Final
With La Liga already won, Real Madrid will be aiming to capture their fifth domestic/European double when they take to the Wembley pitch on the first night of June. If anyone doubted whether Jude Bellingham made the right move when he chose to go to Madrid, a win would surely clear that up once and for all. And in one of those strange football coincidences, it’s Bellingham’s former club Borussia Dortmund that stand in Real’s way.
Despite being off the pace in the Bundesliga – and taking just a point from their first two Champions League group games – the German side have reached the final via lots of grit and some flashes of inspiration. They lost their last Wembley final to their great rivals Bayern Munich in 2013 and they’ll be determined to succeed this time. It’s going to be a cracker.
Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund
Saturday 1 June, 7pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)
Football: UEFA Europa League Final
The Champions League normally gets the lion’s share of the attention, but it seems likely that the 2024 Europa League final will be just as high-profile because Bayer Leverkusen are the story in European football this season. They’ve won their first Bundesliga title, they’ve gone 50 games unbeaten (and counting), and their manager Xabi Alonso has become the hottest coaching property in the world. He’s made stars of the likes of Victor Boniface, Florian Wirtz and Alejandro Grimaldo, and they look a match for anyone on the continent right now.
Atalanta, quarter-final conquerors of Liverpool, are a fine side with a canny coach in Gian Piero Gasperini. But can they stop the Leverkusen juggernaut in Dublin? Tune in on 22 May to find out.
Atalanta v Bayer Leverkusen
Wednesday 22 May, 7pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)
Football: UEFA Europa Conference League Final
Aston Villa were England’s last hope for a UEFA competition finalist in 2023/24 but despite all Unai Emery’s European nous, they fell at the semi-final stage, downed 6-2 on aggregate by an impressive Olympiacos side. With the final at Athens’ Agia Sophia Stadium, you’d expect the Greek side to have the crowd behind them, and as seasoned European campaigners they could well win their first continental trophy on 29 May. Fiorentina, beaten by West Ham in last year’s final, won’t want more runners-up medals and will provide a stern test.
Olympiacos v Fiorentina
Wednesday 29 May, 7pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 529)
Football: UEFA Women’s Champions League Final
Just as in the men’s game, there’ll be no representative from the English league in the contest for the Women’s Champions League trophy, but there is likely to be an English presence on the pitch. Lionesses Keira Walsh and Lucy Bronze have been integral to Barcelona’s Liga F success this season and have the chance to grab another medal at the Estádio de San Mamés in Bilbao.
There they’ll face the mighty Lyon, European champions in six of the past eight seasons, led by the fearsome veteran centre-back Wendie Renard. These two are without doubt Europe’s best sides and we’re sure it’ll be a brilliant contest.
Barcelona v Lyon
Saturday 25 May, 4pm, TNT Sports 2 HD (CH 528)
Football: Serie A
Top (Inter) and bottom (Salernitana) are decided but there’s still plenty to sort out in Serie A, including the rest of the relegation places and the final European qualifying slots. In the penultimate round, Juventus face Bologna in an intriguing match-up: they’re level on points, but Juve are in dreadful form. They briefly went top in January after beating Lecce 3-0, but proceeded to win just two of their next 15 Serie A games
They’ve clung on to ensure a Champions League place thanks to lots of draws, but this season’s surprise package Bologna will be confident of claiming a win and finishing above the Turin giants. Potentially crucial matches in the final round (when fixtures aren’t all played simultaneously, as in England) include Empoli v Roma and Frosinone v Udinese.

Football: Ligue 1
In France, as in Italy, the title was decided a while back and all the intrigue is below the champions. Brest, who visit Toulouse on the final day, seem almost certain to cap their greatest Ligue 1 season ever with Champions League qualification. At the other end Metz have dim hopes of avoiding a relegation play-off, since they have to beat PSG and hope Le Havre lose… with an 11-goal swing. It’s going to be a gripping denouement, with plenty of joy and despair to go around.

Football: A-League Men
You may remember a time when Jack Rodwell was supposed to be the next big thing in English football. The former Everton, Man City and Sunderland midfielder was last seen being red-carded in the A-League semi-final first leg, leaving his Sydney FC side under-strength as they lost 2-1 at home to Central Coast. The Mariners, who are the reigning champs and topped this season’s table, are now firm favourites to make the Grand Final where they’ll meet either Wellington or Melbourne Victory, who drew 0-0 in their first leg.

Rugby Union: European Champions Cup Final
Third time lucky? After two consecutive defeats in the final, Leinster have avoided meeting La Rochelle there again (via the clever means of knocking them out in the quarter-finals) and this year will face Toulouse. The French side were inaugural winners of the competition in 1996 and have won it a further four times since, but four-time winners Leinster know they are just as much Euro royalty as Les Rouge et Noir. They’ll point to Toulouse’s defeats in the Top 14 (Perpignan, Toulon and Bordeaux have all beaten them in recent weeks) as a sign of their vulnerability. With a team packed with Irish and international talent, and plenty of Irish fans expected at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, this could well be Leinster’s year.
Leinster v Toulouse
Saturday 25 May, 2pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)
Rugby Union: European Challenge Cup Final
After Northampton and Harlequins both fell in the Champions Cup semi-finals, the last English hope of a European trophy this season rests with Gloucester. They’ve not had the best season domestically but they’ve seen off all comers in Europe, beating Castres, Ospreys and Benetton Treviso in the knockout stages to reach their fifth Challenge Cup final.
Standing in their way are the first South African team to feature in a European final, and Sharks will be highly motivated by the opportunity to become the first winners too. These two teams had the best records in the pool stage and thoroughly deserve to be finalists in what should be an epic contest.
Gloucester v Sharks
Friday 24 May, 7pm, TNT Sports 1 HD (CH 527)
Rugby Union: Premiership
The final round of Premiership fixtures is on Saturday 18 May, and all five will kick off at 3.05pm. With the battle for the all-important top four places going right to the wire, the key matches are Saracens v Sale and Harlequins v Bristol. Tune in to find out who wins a chance at the big prize by progressing to the semi-finals – which you can see live on TNT Sports on 1 June, with the final following a week later live from Twickenham.

Rugby Union: Women’s Premiership
Saracens, who have already won the Allianz Cup this season, will be aiming to make it a double with a victory in the Premiership final, and you can see their run-in live on TNT Sports as they face Exeter and Loughborough. It currently looks like they’ll finish second in the table behind 2023 champs Gloucester-Hartpury, which means the two will be kept apart in the Premiership semi-finals – setting up a potentially titanic clash in the final, which takes place on 22 June at Exeter’s Sandy Park stadium.

Rugby Union: World Sevens Championship
It’s the final stage of the 2023/24 SVNS, with Argentina in pole position in the men’s competition and New Zealand leading the women’s version. This event in Madrid features the teams who achieved a top-eight place over the previous seven stages and that includes Great Britain’s men’s and women’s sides, who both scraped through in eighth. The lowly position perhaps doesn’t bode well for their chances at the Olympics – but if they can spring surprises against the favourites in Spain, things will be looking up. Enjoy a weekend of fast-paced, free-scoring rugby live on TNT Sports.

Islam Makhachev hasn’t lost a UFC fight since 2015 and he’s held the lightweight championship for over a year, defending it twice against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 (in a bout named Fight of the Year) and UFC 294. At UFC 302 on the first weekend of June, he’ll put the belt on the line again when he faces former interim champ Dustin Poirier – and we’re expecting a memorable clash in New Jersey. A middleweight bout between Paulo Costa and former champ Sean Strickland is also on the night’s card.
Ahead of that, you can see a featherweight match-up between Edson Barboza and Lerone Murphy as they headline in Las Vegas. Later in June the UFC visits Louisville, with middleweights Jared Cannonier and Nassourdine Imavov scheduled to top the bill.

Motorsport: MotoGP + Moto E
The Spanish MotoGP brought an element of chaos to the 2024 championship, as unpredictable weather caused 15 separate crashes on the Circuito de Jerez. Pecco Bagnaia rose above it all to claim his second race win of the season, although it still left him second in the drivers’ standings behind Jorge Martín – who also won the next race, in France. The drivers will be hoping for calmer conditions in Barcelona and Florence; the race scheduled for Kazakhstan in June has already been postponed owing to concerns about flooding.

Motorsport: Formula E
China hasn’t been able to stage a Formula E race since 2019 but it’s back on the calendar this season, moving its E-Prix from Sanya to the Shanghai circuit used in Formula One (although with a slightly different layout). As ever, the season is proving highly competitive: Germany’s Pascal Wehrlein got his nose in front of the pack after a victory in Italy, but the standings are still pretty tight, and almost every driver will feel they’re in with a chance of success when they hit the track. After these races, it’s on to the USA at the end of June.

It’s still Will Brown and Broc Feeney leading the way in the Supercars championship after the Triple Eight drivers scored a one-two in the second race at the Taupō Super400. Brown, who’s finished outside the top two only once so far, looks the favourite for the title at this point – but Feeney isn’t letting him get away. This month the Supercars head for Western Australia and then the Northern Territory.
The first four stages of the 2024 World Rally Championship produced four different winning drivers. Two of them were defending champ Kalle Rovanperä and eight-time champ Sébastien Ogier, who are taking part in selected races only, leaving the way for Belgium’s Thierry Neuville and Britain’s Elfyn Evans to contest this year’s championship title. But Ogier isn’t making it easy for them, and claimed 25 points at the most recent stage in Portugal to sit threateningly behind the leading pack in the standings. This month the teams are in Sardinia.

The WNBA has seen its profile go through the roof recently thanks to the drafting of Caitlin Clark, the point guard who’s broken all sorts of college scoring records with the University of Iowa’s Hawkeyes, and begins her pro career this season. On 18 May you can see Clark’s Indiana Fever against New York Liberty, WNBA finals runners-up for the past two seasons and with plenty of talent in their own ranks, including 2023 MVP Breanna Stewart. The Baltimore Orioles are proving to be contenders again after winning last year’s American League East last year – this season they’ve already won home series over the Royals, Twins, Angels and Yankees. In the coming month, you can see them in action at Camden Yards against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners as they aim to make the play-offs again – where they’ll be determined to improve on 2023, when they were eliminated by the Texas Rangers in the postseason without winning a game. Hockey: Men’s FIH Pro League
You know when you watch a 400m race and because of the staggered starts, it can be difficult to tell who’s doing well? It’s a bit like that with the FIH Pro Leagues, where the fixtures are played in mini-tournaments across the year, so some of the teams have played a lot more than others. Ahead of the men’s May and June fixtures, Netherlands are sitting top – but they’ve played 12 of their 16 games, whereas most have played only eight, and Great Britain, Belgium and Germany just four.
So the others have now got plenty of opportunity to catch up with the reigning champions, and the British and Belgian teams have home advantage with upcoming games taking place in Antwerp and London. The league could look very different after these matches are played.

Hockey: Women’s FIH Pro League
Netherlands are also well ahead on games played in the Women’s FIH Pro League: the difference here is that they have won every one of them, not even needing a single shoot-out (it’s two points for a shoot-out win, as opposed to three). Their lead is surely unassailable but with all the other teams in action in the coming month, the Dutch team could be under pressure from the likes of China, Australia and Argentina when they play again at the end of June. Great Britain had a slow start, but they lost only narrowly to the Netherlands and, like the men, will have home advantage in their impending games.

Badminton: BWF World Tour
Local favourite Kunlavut Vitidsarn was a popular winner of the men’s singles at last year’s Thailand Open and though he’s slipped down the seedings a little to fourth place, he’ll doubtless put in a strong performance with the crowds on his side. Lee Cheuk Yiu is the defending women’s champion.
Like the Malaysia Masters, which takes place the following week, the Thai tournament is a Super 500 event on the tour. The Singapore Open, next in the calendar, is a Super 750 competition with an even bigger prize pot: Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and South Korea’s An Se-young are the singles champs there.
