Think the Premier League is in danger of fizzling out as we head towards the end of 2018? Pfft. Think again. It was another drama-filled weekend in the top flight, with results at both the top and bottom ends of the table proving there’s plenty to look forward to in 2019.
Want to know more about the best of the action? Then read on for our round-up of the biggest moments from Saturday and Sunday…
1. Result of the weekend
Southampton 3-2 Arsenal
If you claim to have seen this result coming, we don’t believe you. The Saints gave their season a huge shot in the arm by ending Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run in dramatic style. It was touch and go for a while as the Gunners came from behind twice, but Charlie Austin’s late strike secured a memorable win for the hosts.
2. Goal of the weekend
Junior Hoilett (Cardiff City) v Watford
In a game peppered with superb goals, Hoilett’s sublime effort topped the lot. Cutting in from the left, the winger curled an inch-perfect shot into the far corner, leaving Ben Foster wondering what the heck just happened. That’s now two goals in four games for the Canadian.
3. Performance of the weekend
Gerard Deulofeu (Watford) v Cardiff City
The teasing, jinking Spaniard was at his teasing, jinking best against Cardiff, scoring a beauty and setting one up as the Hornets held on for a 3-2 win at Vicarage Road. Deulofeu has his fair share of doubters due to a lack of consistency, but when he’s on this kind of form, the 24-year-old is a game changer.
4. Manager of the weekend
Ralph Hasenhüttl (Southampton)
The more colourful the managers in the Premier League, the better. And boy, have Southampton got themselves a technicolour gem in Ralph Hasenhüttl. The “Apline Klopp” went through a whole range of emotions during his team’s win over Arsenal, from joy, to despair, to outright jubilation. Expect more magical moments from this most entertaining of managers throughout the rest of the season.
5. Clanger of the weekend
Alisson Becker (Liverpool) v Manchester United
It didn’t cost his team in the end, but Alisson’s mistake that led to United’s equaliser at Anfield was, frankly, awful. Under zero pressure, the Brazilian inexplicably spilled Romelu Lukaku’s cross, allowing Jesse Lingard to prod home from close range. Eeesh.
