Autumn means top international rugby on the telly, and this weekend two British rivals will trade blows when Wales take on Scotland – and it’s live on BBC One.

This showdown will see the teams compete for the Doddie Weir Cup, created in support of the former Scotland international who announced in 2017 that he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Both Wales and Scotland will face southern-hemisphere opponents over the coming weeks, so this clash should stand them in good stead ahead of big tests against the likes of Australia and South Africa. Throw a passionate crowd and one of sport’s most spectacular stadiums into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a tidy afternoon of rugby action.

Dust off the history books and you’ll find that Wales have ruled this fixture in recent years, winning ten of the past 11 encounters between the sides. But their dominance is likely to be seriously challenged on Saturday.

Why? Because Scotland are a different animal these days. They’ve been reinvigorated since Gregor Townsend’s appointment as coach in summer 2017, winning nine of their past 14 fixtures. Their recent record includes wins over Australia and Argentina, as well as a third-place finish in this year’s RBS 6 Nations – their best showing in the competition for over a decade.

So can Wales start their autumn campaign with a victory on home turf, or will Scotland make a major statement in Cardiff? Follow all the action this Saturday on BBC One.
