Stay ahead of the game with our month-by-month guide to the best sporting action on Virgin TV in 2023
By Chris Miller, Writer
No sooner does one FIFA World Cup finish than the build-up to another one begins. The FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place in New Zealand and Australia this summer (well, their winter), and hopes are high among England fans for success after a brilliant year that’s brought triumph in the European Championship, a perfect World Cup qualifying campaign and a victory over world champions the USA. It’s all live on the BBC and although the locations will mean odd kick-off times, we promise it’ll be well worth getting up early/staying up late to watch.
Another World Cup looming on the 2023 horizon is the men’s Rugby World Cup, which looks likely to be one of the most competitive ever. Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Wales, France and England will all have realistic hopes of claiming the trophy – although a lot could change between now and September, when the first game kicks off in Paris. Good news: the whole tournament is live on ITV, and because it’s in France, the matches are on at UK viewing-friendly times!
And there’s yet another global title up for grabs in the form of cricket’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, taking place in South Africa in February. England won the men’s version in convincing style in 2022, so can the women’s team emulate them? They’ll need to get past the all-conquering Aussies… Then later in the year comes one more, as England travel to India to defend the ICC Men’s World Cup one-day title they won so memorably in 2019.
The other huge event of the year is the Ryder Cup, the biennial battle for men’s golf supremacy between the USA and Europe. It’s being held in Italy for the first time, and Europe are always strong on this side of the Atlantic: in fact, they’ve won seven of the past 10 contests overall – but the US are the holders after a comprehensive 19-9 victory in Wisconsin in 2021. Both events are live on Sky Sports.
And, of course, there’s plenty more sporting action all year on your Virgin tellybox, including all the usual highlights like the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, Formula One and MotoGP racing, the Rugby Premiership, Six Nations and European Champions Cup, the Super League and Challenge Cup, the Open Championship and the rest of golf’s majors, the Netball Superleague and World Cup, the Tour de France, the Grand National, Wimbledon, the NFL season and much, much more. Plus it’s an Ashes summer for both men and women, as England and Australia strive to come out on top in their long-standing cricketing rivalry…
Here’s our month-by-month guide to all the sporting highlights of the year ahead, which we’ll update throughout the year as more events are confirmed. Bookmark it now to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the action…
