Set against the 10th Annual Hunger Games, Suzanne Collin’s prequel instalment sees a young Coryo mentor District 12’s female tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). The pair form an unsteady alliance before the games’ corruption eventually leads Coryo to his dictatorial destiny.

Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) proves himself to be a silver screen triple threat with his feature directorial debut, Poolman. Also co-written by and starring Pine as the titular pool cleaner, the flick follows Darren Barrenman (Pine) who’s fighting for his Los Angeles hometown to be a better place. When he’s approached by mysterious femme fatale June Del Rey (DeWanda Wise, Imaginary) to expose a shady local business deal, he takes on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer with the help of his friends. Big hitters Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star.

The blockbusting and indeed gutbusting comic-book adaptation is back for a fourth season, and the supes are close to taking over. Despite the best efforts of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team, Homelander (Antony Starr) has the nation in his grip, and humanity’s about to become an endangered species. Butcher and the Boys are losing hope – until an old friend (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, The Walking Dead) gets in touch to offer some. A virus that kills supes? It might just work. If they can see off the super chickens first. Expect more blood, gore, virulent swearing and entirely unsubtle parallels with real-life politics in one of TV’s most extravagantly entertaining shows.

The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganatha

Travel restrictions mean we haven’t seen much of Romesh Ranganathan’s globetrotting adventures recently, but the BAFTA-winning show is back for a fourth (if you don’t count the lockdown “From My Sofa” episodes) and final series that takes our reluctant hero to southern Africa. To start with, he’s in Uganda for white-water rafting on the Nile, wildlife spotting in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and a banana gin tasting session. But it’s not all fun times, as he also speaks to a local LGBTQ+ activist facing oppressive new legislation. The later episodes take the Weakest Link host to Rwanda and Madagascar.

This reboot, executive-produced by the character’s creator Ian Rankin (no relation), focuses on John Rebus’s early career and his relationship with his brother Michael (Brian Ferguson, The Ipcress File) as John finds himself torn between family and duty.

Tokyo Vice

After season 1 ended with a shocking murder and an attack on yakuza enforcer Sato (Show Kasamatsu), investigative journalist Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) realises his journey through the Tokyo underworld still has a long way to go before any kind of resolution. When a politician is implicated in the homicide, the case gets even murkier, and Adelstein has to tread extra carefully. This classy crime series, also starring Rachel Keller and Ken Watanabe, keeps the tension high throughout.

The Outlaws

If you thought the Outlaws’ problems were over when they saw off crime boss The Dean (Claes Bang) at the end of the second series, think again. There’s plenty more in store for the community service gang in Stephen Merchant and Elgin James’ comedy drama – and it all starts with the discovery of a corpse. Thanks to the US actors’ strike, there’s sadly less Christopher Walken in this series, but all the other regulars including Darren Boyd, Eleanor Tomlinson and Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning are back for the third instalment.

This film looks at the fortnight that changed his life, including up-close action footage and reflections from the man himself, who’ll be a BBC pundit at this summer’s tournament.

Luca Guadagnino, director of this year’s tennis-based hit movie Challengers, has an esoteric filmography including hazy romance Call Me By Your Name and supernatural horror remake Suspiria. But Bones And All is arguably his strangest movie. Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet plays Lee, a young man who becomes romantically involved with Maren (Taylor Russell, Lost In Space) when they
discover they have, um, similar tastes. For people. So are they self-indulgent and cruel, or are their strange desires natural and undeserving of blame? Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

The Wrong Man: 17 Years Behind Bars

In 2003, Andrew Malkinson was convicted of a violent sexual assault and spent the next 17 years incarcerated while maintaining his innocence. Appeal after appeal was turned down, and only after his release for good behaviour in 2020 was his conviction quashed. Malkinson described his imprisonment as being “forcibly kidnapped… by the state” and continues to campaign against miscarriages of justice. This documentary tells Malkinson’s story, exploring the flaws in the legal system, and the devastating effects on a man who spent years locked up for a crime he didn’t commit.

But what’s very much in place is the marvellous Machiavellian manipulation as everyone strives to win by any means necessary. And we can’t get enough of that. US comedian and actor Jerrod Carmichael (Poor Things) has already created and starred in a semi-autobiographical comedy about his life – but now he’s doing it for real in the rather bluntly titled Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. Like that title, Carmichael is practising “radical honesty”, and while that might help soothe his conscience it doesn’t necessarily do much for those around him. Covering love, sex, infidelity and the difficulties of balancing a functioning personal life with a career in stand-up, this is frank, eye-opening and darkly funny.
