Here’s our picks of the best stuff to stream this May.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

Find it in Apps > Prime Video from Friday 31 May

Volunteer as tribute and enter The Hunger Games world as you’ve never seen it before. Before Katniss Everdeen was leading a rebellion against the Capitol, its leader President Snow was better known as Coriolanus “Coryo” Snow (Tom Blyth). Set against the 10th Annual Hunger Games, Suzanne Collin’s prequel instalment sees a young Coryo mentor District 12’s female tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). The pair form an unsteady alliance before the games’ corruption eventually leads Coryo to his dictatorial destiny.

Poolman

Find it in Apps > Prime Video from Friday 7 June

Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) proves himself to be a silver screen triple threat with his feature directorial debut, Poolman. Also co-written by and starring Pine as the titular pool cleaner, the flick follows Darren Barrenman (Pine) who’s fighting for his Los Angeles hometown to be a better place. When he’s approached by mysterious femme fatale June Del Rey (DeWanda Wise, Imaginary) to expose a shady local business deal, he takes on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer with the help of his friends. Big hitters Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star.

The Boys

Find season 4 in Apps > Prime Video from Thursday 13 June. Season 1-3 available now

The blockbusting and indeed gutbusting comic-book adaptation is back for a fourth season, and the supes are close to taking over. Despite the best efforts of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team, Homelander (Antony Starr) has the nation in his grip, and humanity’s about to become an endangered species. Butcher and the Boys are losing hope – until an old friend (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, The Walking Dead) gets in touch to offer some. A virus that kills supes? It might just work. If they can see off the super chickens first. Expect more blood, gore, virulent swearing and entirely unsubtle parallels with real-life politics in one of TV’s most extravagantly entertaining shows.

Federer: Twelve Final Days

Find it in Apps > Prime Video from Thursday 20 June

Tennis fans, rejoice! Award-winning film-makers Asif Kapadia (Amy) and Joe Sabia (Vogue’s 73 Questions) have joined forces to bring viewers unprecedented access into the life of sporting legend Roger Federer. Filmed across the final days of the 2022 Laver Cup which marked Federer’s retirement, this intimate film captures the tennis star’s triumphs both on and off the court throughout his decades-long career. Fellow pros Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray also feature.

I Am: Celine Dion

Find it in Apps > Prime Video from Tuesday 25 June

As one of the world’s most beloved and decorated singers, on the surface it looks like Celine Dion has it all. However, this revealing new documentary from Oscar nominated film-maker Irene Taylor (The Final Inch) proves that looks can be deceiving. While the film celebrates Dion’s career accomplishments and remarkable legacy, it also details her 17-year secret struggle with the rare autoimmune neurological disorder Stiff-Person syndrome.

My Lady Jane

Find season 1 in Apps > Prime Video from Thursday 27 June

The history books have Lady Jane Grey pegged as the “Nine Days’ Queen”, who was executed for high treason by her cousin Queen Mary I in 1554. However, in the screen adaption of New York Times bestselling novel My Lady Jane, she’s a heroine who evades death and has a life filled with romance and adventure. Emily Bader (Charmed) is Lady Jane Grey, with Rob Brydon (Gavin And Stacey), Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter franchise), Edward Bluemel (Sex Education), Anna Chancellor (Fifteen-Love) and Kate O’Flynn (Everyone Else Burns) also starring.

The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganatha

Stream series 4 now in Apps > BBC iPlayer. Series 1-3 also available

Travel restrictions mean we haven’t seen much of Romesh Ranganathan’s globetrotting adventures recently, but the BAFTA-winning show is back for a fourth (if you don’t count the lockdown “From My Sofa” episodes) and final series that takes our reluctant hero to southern Africa. To start with, he’s in Uganda for white-water rafting on the Nile, wildlife spotting in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and a banana gin tasting session. But it’s not all fun times, as he also speaks to a local LGBTQ+ activist facing oppressive new legislation. The later episodes take the Weakest Link host to Rwanda and Madagascar.

Lost Boys & Fairies

Stream all episodes now in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Sion Daniel Young (The Left Behind) and Fra Free (Rebel Moon) are at the heart of award-winning writer Daf James’ tender “coming-of-middle-age” drama. The three-part series follows the story of singer and artistic extraordinaire Gabriel (Young) and his partner Andy (Fee), as they embark on the incredible journey of adoption  together.

Rebus

Stream all episodes now in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Richard Rankin (Trust Me) becomes the third actor to play the Edinburgh police detective previously portrayed by John Hannah and Ken Stott. This reboot, executive-produced by the character’s creator Ian Rankin (no relation), focuses on John Rebus’s early career and his relationship with his brother Michael (Brian Ferguson, The Ipcress File) as John finds himself torn between family and duty.

Tokyo Vice

Stream season 2 now in Apps > BBC iPlayer. Season 1 also available

After season 1 ended with a shocking murder and an attack on yakuza enforcer Sato (Show Kasamatsu), investigative journalist Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) realises his journey through the Tokyo underworld still has a long way to go before any kind of resolution. When a politician is implicated in the homicide, the case gets even murkier, and Adelstein has to tread extra carefully. This classy crime series, also starring Rachel Keller and Ken Watanabe, keeps the tension high throughout.

The Outlaws

Stream series 3 now in Apps > BBC iPlayer. Series 1+2 also available

If you thought the Outlaws’ problems were over when they saw off crime boss The Dean (Claes Bang) at the end of the second series, think again. There’s plenty more in store for the community service gang in Stephen Merchant and Elgin James’ comedy drama – and it all starts with the discovery of a corpse. Thanks to the US actors’ strike, there’s sadly less Christopher Walken in this series, but all the other regulars including Darren Boyd, Eleanor Tomlinson and Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning are back for the third instalment.

Rooney 2004: World At His Feet

Stream it now in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Ahead of EURO 2024, which starts on 14 June, cast your mind back 20 years ago to when an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney was the most exciting young talent in the football world, ready and willing to tear up 2004’s edition of the competition. Things didn’t quite go according to plan for the team, but Rooney became an international superstar. This film looks at the fortnight that changed his life, including up-close action footage and reflections from the man himself, who’ll be a BBC pundit at this summer’s tournament.

Bones And All

Stream it now in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Luca Guadagnino, director of this year’s tennis-based hit movie Challengers, has an esoteric filmography including hazy romance Call Me By Your Name and supernatural horror remake Suspiria. But Bones And All is arguably his strangest movie. Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet plays Lee, a young man who becomes romantically involved with Maren (Taylor Russell, Lost In Space) when they
discover they have, um, similar tastes. For people. So are they self-indulgent and cruel, or are their strange desires natural and undeserving of blame? Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

D-Day: The Unheard Tapes

Stream all episodes now in Apps > BBC iPlayer

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings this month, this three-part series brings history’s biggest seaborne invasion to screens using real stories and real voices. Actors re-enact the operation, telling the story by lip-syncing to rare and previously unheard recordings of those who were there. From the launch under cover of darkness to the chaos of Sword Beach, this gives incredible insight into the military action that changed the course of the Second World War.

The Wrong Man: 17 Years Behind Bars

Stream it from Thursday 6 June in Apps > BBC iPlayer

In 2003, Andrew Malkinson was convicted of a violent sexual assault and spent the next 17 years incarcerated while maintaining his innocence. Appeal after appeal was turned down, and only after his release for good behaviour in 2020 was his conviction quashed. Malkinson described his imprisonment as being “forcibly kidnapped… by the state” and continues to campaign against miscarriages of justice. This documentary tells Malkinson’s story, exploring the flaws in the legal system, and the devastating effects on a man who spent years locked up for a crime he didn’t commit.

Malory Towers

Stream series 5 from Monday 10 June in Apps > BBC iPlayer. Series 1-4 also available

The Rivers Sisters, Darrell and Felicity, are back at Malory Towers for another school year but things are now a little different: headstrong Darrell is now Head of Games, while her friend Mary-Lou has come out of her shell and is Head of Lower Form. For Felicity, change comes in the form of a new second-year, Jo, a charismatic rebel who tempts Felicity to break the rules. Midnight feasts, lacrosse sticks and pranks abound in a fun new series of the children’s drama based on Enid Blyton’s much-loved books.

Monsoon

Stream it from Tuesday 11 June in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Henry Golding (Last Christmas) is Kit, a Vietnam-born man whose family fled to England 30 years ago. He returns to the country to reconnect with his roots – but, struggling to recognise it as home and unable to remember the language, he feels like a stranger. As he searches for a place to scatter his parents’ ashes, he meets estranged cousin Lee (David Tran) and free-spirited Linh (Molly Harris), who help him piece together his fractured memories. He also bonds with American designer Lewis (Parker Sawyers) over their tragic shared family history and finds himself falling in love. A sensitive and beautifully shot film.

The Traitors US

Stream all episodes from Wednesday 12 June in Apps > BBC iPlayer

The American version of the megahit competitive reality show does things a little differently. While Claudia Winkleman oversees the scheming of members of the public in the British show, in the US they like to have a sprinkling of celebrities. Somewhat bizarrely, these include Love Island’s Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and, er, former House of Commons speaker John Bercow. But what’s very much in place is the marvellous Machiavellian manipulation as everyone strives to win by any means necessary. And we can’t get enough of that. Scottish actor Alan Cumming is your host.

Queenie

Find it in Apps > Channel 4 from Tuesday 4 June

On the surface Queenie Jenkins (Dionne Brown) is like any other 20-something millennial living in a big city. But this screen adaption of Candice Carty-Williams bestselling novel is so much more. Get ready to laugh, cry and root for the eponymous heroine as she navigates the end of her long-term relationship, some regrettable decisions and everything else that life throws at her. Jon Pointing (Big Boys), Joseph Marcell (The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air), Tilly Keeper (You) and presenter Laura Whitmore also star.

Celebrity Gogglebox

Find series 6 in Apps > Channel 4 from Friday 7 June. Series 1-5 available now

Some of Britain’s biggest names offering their critiques and opinions this time round are Jennifer Saunders and Beattie Edmondson, Danny and Dani Dyer, Jordan and Ashley Banjo with Perri Kiely, Babatunde Aléshé and Mo Gilligan, Rylan and his mum Linda, Shaun Ryder and Bez, Fearne Cotton and Gok Wan, and more.

The Piano

Find the final episode of series 2 in Apps > Channel 4 from Sunday 9 June. Series 1 available now

After weeks of sublime performances from amateur pianists across the country, the chosen finalists will be showcasing their incredible talents once more on Aviva Studios’ stage in Manchester. Bake Off: The Professionals

Hosts Ellie Taylor and Liam Charles are back in action to search for more of the UK’s best pastry chefs to impress world-class pâtissier experts Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden. For their first challenge, the bakers ditch the cookbooks and roll up their sleeves to create 36 individual tarte aux fraise and one chocolate amenity in just three and a half hours. We have no idea what those are, but sign us up to eat all of them.

The Great

Find series 3 in Apps > Channel 4 from Monday 17 June. Series 1-2 available now

Inspired by Catherine the Great, who reigned over Russia in the 18th century, this satirical series is bigger and bloodier than ever in its third season. Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning, The Girl From Plainville) has reconciled with Peter II (Nicholas Hoult, The Menu), who is recovering from his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands. While Peter busies himself with fathering and hunting, it’s not long before more shocking scandals rock the royal court.

Outrageous Homes

Find series 1 in Apps > Channel 4 from Monday 24 June

Fed up of seeing nothing but endless reels of pristine show homes in far away places on your screens? Changing Rooms’ Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is of that same mind. That’s why the interior designer has teamed up with Channel 4 in search of proud-to-be-different homeowners, stepping past the threshold of some of the UK’s most unique and eccentric homes. Not a beige wall in sight.

A Small Light

Find it in On Demand now

Bel Powley (A Royal Night Out) stuns with her powerful performance as wartime hero Miep Gies, who helped hide the Frank family from the Nazis during the Second World War. Across eight episodes, the series captures the moving story of how Miep and her husband Jan (Joe Cole, Peaky Blinders) risked their lives to shelter the Franks and other Jews for 761 days in their secret annexe. Compelling viewing.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Find it in On Demand now

Return to the world of The Walking Dead with this new series focusing on two of the show’s most popular characters, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). It’s set several years after the conclusion of the original series, and Rick’s still being forced to work for the Civilian Republic Military. He’s resigned to his fate – but when his squad comes under attack from a mysterious enemy, it changes everything. You can now watch all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead in On Demand as well as all six episodes of The Ones Who Live, while further spin-offs Daryl Dixon and Dead City are coming later this year.

Sister Boniface Mysteries

Find series 3 in On Demand now. Series 1+2 also available

Everyone’s favourite moped-riding, crime-solving nun (Lorna Watson) is back for another series of rural murder and misdemeanours, kicking off with excitement in the air in Great Slaughter where screen tests are taking place for the plum movie role of suave British spy Jonas Best. But no sooner have we met the handsome would-be stars than there’s a suspicious death and Sister Boniface is on the case. Expect plenty more homicides and intrigue amid the rustic cottages.

Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show

Find season 1 in On Demand now

US comedian and actor Jerrod Carmichael (Poor Things) has already created and starred in a semi-autobiographical comedy about his life – but now he’s doing it for real in the rather bluntly titled Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. Like that title, Carmichael is practising “radical honesty”, and while that might help soothe his conscience it doesn’t necessarily do much for those around him. Covering love, sex, infidelity and the difficulties of balancing a functioning personal life with a career in stand-up, this is frank, eye-opening and darkly funny.

Stormy

Find it in On Demand now

Dive into the bizarre and compelling story of Stormy Daniels, the adult film star at the centre of the court case in which Donald Trump was proven to have illegally falsified documents to cover up the payment of hush money, and look behind the events that catapulted her into the spotlight. With extensive access to Daniels herself, the documentary attempts to show that she is more than just this unprecedented legal case and tabloid news story, showing how she balances motherhood with her work while contending with the explosive revelation that upended her life. A fascinating watch.

BBQ USA

Find season 2 in On Demand from Monday 10 June

Barbecue is taken extremely seriously in the USA, something restaurateur, chef and author Michael Symon uncovered when he visited cooking competitions around the nation in the first season of BBQ USA. Now he’s back for more, with an itinerary that takes him from Florida to Washington state via Louisiana, Kansas City and Queens. Find out about different techniques and sauces, some of the more exotic meats that go on the grill, and the competitive but supportive community of BBQers who take part, in a series that will send you outside to fire up your own grills.

Deadliest Catch

Find season 20 in On Demand from Wednesday 12 June. Seasons 18+19 also available

One of the most venerable reality shows around celebrates 20 years on TV with a new season, still following the day-to-day life of crab fishermen in Alaska and those involved in the industry (most significantly the US Coast Guard rescue crew, whose services are frequently called upon). More than 330 episodes have aired but that hasn’t dulled the excitement of seeing these seagoing warriors hitting the freezing, stormy waters again and again to bring home their haul.

Sin City Tow

Find season 1 in On Demand from Thursday 20 June

You might strike it lucky in the casinos of Las Vegas – but be sure to remember where you parked. The city’s tow truck drivers often hit the jackpot when gamblers are distracted by cards or slot machines and vehicles are left where they shouldn’t be. Every tow is an opportunity for a payday, but things can get tense when motorists see their ride getting apprehended – especially if they’re already down on their luck. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas… and sometimes the thing that stays is your car.

Gordon Ramsay Uncharted

Find season 3 in On Demand from Sunday 23 June

This series takes the irascible chef to some far-flung parts of the world where he discovers the delights of the local cuisine. From Hawaii to Laos, from Sumatra to Norway, it’s been a fascinating journey, and there’s more to come. In these new episodes, Ramsay learns about centuries-old baking traditions in southern Portugal, how to work with lobster in Maine and why rattlesnake is a cornerstone of the diet on the Texas-Mexico border. With further trips to Iceland, Puerto Rico, Croatia and more, Ramsay will make you want to try it all.

Mayor Of Kingstown

Stream season 3 from Monday 3 June on Paramount+. Season 1-2 available now

Plus a face from his past is back to cause more trouble for McLusky. Will he meet the challenge head-on – or will leaving town prove too tempting?
