Return to the Motherland

With the hit BBC comedy back for series 2, the cast and creators, including Sharon Hogan, tell all

How will the mums (and dads) of Motherland manage to navigate a new term at both the school gates and at home? We’re guessing, badly…

Motherland, Monday 7 October, 10pm, BBC Two HD (CH 102). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer

Shining a hilarious spotlight on the perils of motherhood, Motherland began life as a pilot aired during BBC Two’s “Sitcom Season”. Series 1 soon followed, with the writing team – Sharon Hogan, comedian Holly Walsh, and Helen and Graham Linehan (Father Ted and The IT Crowd) – delving further into the daily lives of stressed-out mums.

The farcical, side-splitting series follows Anna Maxwell Martin’s permanently exasperated Julia as she navigates life as a mother, from her kid’s first day at a new school to meeting the “Alpha Mums” led by the too-good-to-be-true Amanda (Lucy Punch).

Now, though, with season 2 on the way, a whole new term and new challenges, await Julia and her unlikely cohorts Kevin (Paul Ready) and Liz (Diane Morgan)…

Along with juggling competitive parenting, relationships and self-employment, alongside child care and keeping up appearances, there’s a new face on the school scene to contend with. Tanya Moodie joins the passive aggressive parents of Motherland as larger-than-life Meg.

That’s not all that season 2 has in store, though, and we caught up with Sharon, Holly, Helen and some of the cast to find out more.
