All we know about The Power Of Parker

All we know about The Power Of Parker

Looks can be deceiving, as stressed businessman Martin Parker knows all too well in this brand new BBC comedy drama from the writers of Car Share

By Charlotte Briggs, Staff Writer

Game Of Thrones star Conleth Hill swaps the sweeping landscapes of Westeros for the small industrial town of Stockport in the BBC’s latest comedy caper. Hill stars as Martin Parker, a self-made businessman with “the ambition of Alan Sugar, the looks of Robert Kilroy Silk” and enough slick charm to give Del Boy a run for his money.

Created and written by the brilliantly talented Car Share duo Paul Coleman and Sian Gibson, the six-part series is set in Manchester circa 1990. It’s the final days of Margaret Thatcher’s term as Prime Minister and Parker, a very much self-proclaimed “local celebrity” and staunch Conservative supporter, seems to have it all.

He has an empire of electrical stores and a flash car to his name, as well as his loyal wife Diane (Rosie Cavaliero, Gentlemen Jack) by his side. Yet in reality, Thatcher is not the only one who’s about to be ousted as Parker’s world is about to come tumbling down. Take a peek at the trailer for a preview of his comeuppance…

Not only is Parker swimming in debt with loan sharks hot on his trail, his ruthless pursuit of money, sex and success by any means necessary is about to catch up with him. And unbeknownst to the sinful swindler, there are quite a few faces who are ready to bring about his downfall.

So what’s driven long-suffering Diane, his father-in-law Dougie (George Costigan, Happy Valley), his clandestine lover Kath (Sian Gibson, Murder, They Hope) and Kath’s best friend Gladys (Sheila Reid, Benidorm) to such a devious plot? Don’t miss the first episode at 9.30pm on Friday 28 July on BBC One HD (CH 101) when all will start to become clear!

The show has teased a cameo from Steve Pemberton, and the appearance of the League Of Gentlemen star combined with the show’s setting in 1990 has given us a serious craving for more 90s nostalgia. There’s a reason that this decade’s fashion, music and pop culture has inspired new generations, as proven in the variety of modern TV series that are set in this era.
